Tryout logistics club side

So in a club that has eg 3 teams of 14 players at an age group and conducts group “tryouts”,
logistically what does the club do?
Do they rank all the current club players and then try to rank newcomers at tryouts ?
Do they a lot strictly based on ability or by positions ? Eg best 10 players are defenders so they slot all to 1 team and convert position or a lot to different teams?
Who makes final call? Coaches draft players or TD just overrides?
For like U10-U14 how does your club do it ?

McLean parent here. They botch it.

At the older ages (say U14 or so) positions start to matter a bit in the ranking.

At U10/11/12 the kids should be versatile and so positions aren’t as important.

The ranking does happen, then looking at holes in key positions.

At our club the rosters are not alphabetical when they come out and it is clear that the order is the rank of players.
Even though they don’t say so, it is apparent

Coaches meet/advised to rank their current team players roughlly and recommend any to live up or down. Tryouts held. Coaches rank new players as possible team 1,2 or 3. At 2nd tryout players are ranked again and moved up or down.
Coaches then huddle up and form teams as invites roll out filling team 1 then 2 then 3

That’s the narrative. Most do as they please and let feelings mix with facts. Truthfully, it’s a lot of BS.

This is probably true. They’ll have to balance things like ‘if we don’t promote them they may leave the club...’

It’s usually nowhere near as rigorous and logical as you suggest or hope. Way more subjective, one coach’s guy feel. At the younger ages, at many clubs, it’s a matter of finding the biggest, most aggressive kids.

+5 - and ignore kids who have been with the club (meaning, don’t even look at them) for the shiny new object from another team.

This is every club. They have seen your kids all year round. Know how they are already so no need to really pay attention to them. Most of the times they already have in their mind how many they want to cut (for new players etc) so they know how many they want to take in.

Right, but the problem with this (and what McLean did specifically), is new kids that the year-round kids were running circles around were offered higher teams than said circle runners. It’s disappointing, though I expect there will be some movement in the fall.

What age group PP? Sounds like there might be a lot of animosity towards new kids coming into McLean. We are one such family, and this makes me nervous for my DD. Also make me nervous for the quality of play that will ensue if players really placed incorrectly.

I have heard this same complaint from parents at U10-U12. I think a lot of it has to do with the disorganization, mixed messaging and anxiety about new coaches. There is also so much subjectivity in the process. But I don’t disagree that there will have to be movement next year given the way the tryouts were handled (poorly).

PP - nobody will hold this mess against your child, FWIW. But yes, there may be movement.
