MLSnext and HS soccer

I can’t read through all the junk.

Can a full-time MLSnext player play HS soccer?
Anonymous
No, unless they get a scholarship from a high school that is tied to them playing soccer for that high school. In that case, they can apply for a waiver. I am thinking this may apply for areas such as Baltimore area where high school soccer is big.

Ok. Thanks.

My kid is at a private HS in DC (no scholarship) and plans to play for the school so I guess ecnl is best.

No HS soccer. My kids aren’t considering any MLSnext team. They love playing for their HS team.

So...how does it work for an ECNL kid? ECNL teams train 4 days a week. You HS team will want priority, correct? So your ECNL team will allow him to miss practices and play games? I know the kids on my son's team (and parents) would raise holy hell if a kid is missing practices and getting field time.

Generally games take priority over practices.

You will have to work out with coaches which practices your DC attends.

In general club team would take priority over school team. If practices don’t conflict coaches may want DC to attend on both on same day.

No, they need a waiver from MLS Next.

Same. MLSNext is a deal breaker for us.

Your kid would have to be good enough to make an MLS Next roster first!

Kid is on a current team that is becoming an MLSnext team. It’s not like it’s really different from the current A team. You don’t give it a new name and “wham!” we are now superior. Not many came out at all. It will likely be 95% of current team.

Speaking from the position of having a DS with some ambition - never crossed our minds to try out for an MLSNEXT u19 this spring. He made a u23 USL2 squad as a HS junior but couldn’t catch a sniff from DC the past couple years so he gave up on even trying for local stuff like this.

That's the ticket--if he wants to be a pro, he needs to train and play with men.

or he can play college and wait until age 23, so he's 7 years behind the curve

Or he can co tiniest getting straight As in Honors/AP track, attend a fantastic University and make way more $$$ than a DCU player which is not going to happen for almost every kid playing.

He's doing a few, not all AP. We'll see what the grades/test scores get him. Just took the SAT You can always chase the soccer dream and falter, then re-acquire the education track. You can't do it the other way around. Also, with a clean background/willingness to move about the country any of our kids can make GS14 for uncle sugar pretty easy. Throw in some LEAP and you're cooking with gas!
