Kid is on a current team that is becoming an MLSnext team. It’s not like it’s really different from the current A team. You don’t give it a new name and “wham!” we are now superior. Not many came out at all. It will likely be 95% of current team.

This is true for “New League X” or “pre-League X academy” a year later. All of which is to say that coach and player talent ultimately determine the quality of a team, not a league. The league can attract people over time for higher level competition. But ultimately there is no magic for any league.

So if my DS currently plays HS and next year the club is moving to MLSNext for his age group, will he be grandfathered? If not, should I be looking at ECNL clubs? He’s not likely to go pro, but could play at some of the colleges he’s considering.
