| My ten yr old son has been complaining off and on about foot pain. It usually comes on after he’s walked a fair amount, but lately it comes on after an hour of sports practice. He says both feet hurt, it hurts to walk. Anyone have experience with this? |
| Is he wearing the right size shoe? |
| Get custom orthotics from podiatrist. |
| Yes, his shoes are the right size. He says it’s like an ache. |
| Probably cheap shoes with not enough cushioning. |
| What sports does he play? My 11-year-old was having this issue and I realized the soccer team does not stretch appropriately. We started looking up ankle and foot stretching exercises and that is happened tremendously. I think it’s a little bit of overuse and growing pains. |
Are you sure? His sports shoes should be bigger than his regular shoes. Also, you many also want to look into changing brands. My youngest son’s arch is in the wrong place in Nike baseball cleats, but UA cleats are fine. Same issue - he said his feet were hurting. After a few questions, we realized it was where his arch was in the shoe. |
| Maybe Sever's disease, which sounds much worse than it is. It's from growing fast and the muscles not catching up. |
| Why is this in the teen forum? |
It’s in the “tween and teen” forum. |
Thank you for this tip. Did you take your son somewhere specific to be properly fitted? Any recommendations for shoe stores that could help? |
| What part of his foot? Heel pain is really common at this age from Sever’s. |

NP. Shoe Train in Cabin John is, hands down, the best place to get fitting for shoes with the support needed. We're in Springfield and make the trek several times a year for my kids that wear custom orthodics.
I also second the recommendation to consider orthodics - either custom or semi-custom (Shoe Train also has a large selection and are good at fitting them, as well). I suggest you get an appointment with a good podiatrist to have the foot pain analyzed (might be Severs) and who could then let you know your DS would benefit from orthodics. The podiatrist would also facilitate getting them if you need custom. |
| Take him to The Good Feet Store. My DD complained of foot "ache" after long walks or activity and turns out she had arch issues. They fitted her with some arch supports and the relief was almost instantaneous. |
10 isn't a tween. It's a 4th grader...Elementary School. This is a health issue at any rate. |
