How to fix a dress cut too low

Anonymous
I tend to look best in v neck styles do to my big bust but I feel like most new dresses are cut really low. Or maybe it’s something about the distance between my shoulders and waist? At any rate, I’m in my 40s and don’t feel like having my enormous boobs half disrobed. I’m not opposed to some décolletage necessarily it’s the deep between boob v that’s the issue. Fwiw I gave several older dresses with a more normal v but in the last 3 years it seems like everything is lower.

Any ideas on how to address this? I have a black dress that I can wear with a beautiful lace slip I have that echoes the neckline but other than that any solution seems Duggar-ish.

A good tailor should be able to modify the depth of the v, whether it's sewing it higher up or adding a lace/semi-sheer panel to the lower part. If you want them to close it up it will probably be easier if you size up so there is more fabric to work with, and they can take the waist in while they're working on it.

I wear a tank or a bralet (similar to what PP posted but with straps).

I’ve added a ribbon or lace edging. It keeps the v-neck look, but provides coverage.

Thanks did you have a seamstress do it or do yourself?

Have it shortened at the shoulders.

+1 How this is addressed also depends on the cut of the neckline. As PP suggests, getting a size larger so there's more allowance is really helpful.

Either or tailor or get higher necklines. Tanks (that show) under dresses and t-shirts look frumpy

Discuss with a seamstress, OP. It will depend on each dress. They can be shortened at the shoulder, the V can be closed, or a panel added, depending on how the dress is constructed and how much wiggle room you have. I've had waists taken in inexpensively by seamstresses in dry cleaning shops, so you can ask there first, perhaps?

+1 They will give you a quote and I've generally found it less expensive than I expected and well worth the money!

Initially a seamstress, but I then learned to do it myself.
