Would you travel to Europe this summer with unvaccinated kids to see family?

Anonymous
I haven’t seen my sister and her husband and three young kids for over two years. DH and I are vaccinated and we’re considering a trip to see them - but, they are not vaccinated and don’t know when they’ll be eligible. They are in the U.K.

We’ve been quite careful and would otherwise not take a vacation that involves flying, but I’m seeing how big my nieces and nephews are and if we don’t go this summer it will likely be another year before we see them!

Would you go? Or is it too risky for the kids?

I'm with Emily Oster on this one. Your unvaccinated kids are at a lower risk than they are during flu season (even if they get the flu shot every year). If you'd fly during flu season, you can fly with unvaccinated kids.

My best friend is. She will have a 2.5yo and an infant and is planning to go to Europe for a month to stay with her DH's parents.

No, and it's the reason why my parents are flying here instead. We are already planning overseas travel for summer 2022.

Yes, I would go... especially in the U.K. where most people will be vaccinated anyway.

Everyone in the plane wears masks and has to have a negative test result to board. it’s pretty safe in my opinion

I would go if you can get in but you probably can't right?

They're only talking about letting fully vaccinated people in, which would obviously exclude children under 12.

No. I get that COVID is low risk for kids, but it looks like there will also be a vaccine available by fall/winter. I don't think it's worth the risk either for your kid or whoever your kid could bring it back to when a vaccine right around the corner.

The kids would not be vaccinated. They are still carriers and could pose a risk to their other non-vaccinated relatives/kids.

You can definitely go to the UK unvaccinated if you adhere to quarantine and testing regulations. I've been once and my DD who is a UK student has been twice since the start of COVID.

Here are the rules:

Kids transmit the virus at about half the rate that adults do. With testing and quarantine, how are they posing a major risk?

Yes, I would. I plan to fly with my kids out west. I think flying is pretty safe with all the precautions in place.

Yes, I would if there are no issues going in and out of the country. I would love to see my parents in Asia but they have a very strict 14-day quarantine rule and a complicated application process for foreigners (my husbands and kids). If there are no immigration complications/issues, I would definitely visit my family even if my kids are not vaccinated.

Personally I wouldn't but that's not a moral stance just personal risk preference.

If I wanted to kill them. You are an idiot.

Have your sister and family fly here instead (you can help with the cost if you want). She and her husband can get vaccinated while they are here. Agree with everyone that there is very low risk to the children flying who are unvaccinated.
