Eaton, Mann or Murch?

We have really low lottery numbers (15 and under) for all 3 for 1st grade. We're also under 20 for Lafayette and Janney. I realize all of these schools have been discussed regularly but curious if anyone can share their thoughts. A great outdoor space, student diversity and, an inclusive parent community/involvement are the most important factors for us. Thanks!

Congrats on getting a really amazing master number! I'm not an expert but I don't think you should plan for Murch or Mann to go to 15 for first. Murch I wouldn't expect to get to 5. You might get in at Eaton.

Was coming to say the same thing as PP. Based on historical data, Eaton might be your only shot. But who knows what will happen with waitlists this year. They could shift a lot - Good luck!

Original Poster here - thanks for your feedback. I understand that historically there's no much movement but based on all the chatter here, everyone is fleeing or opting for private so hopefully our chances will be good this year. So my question remains - Eaton, Mann or Murch? Would love to learn the pros and cons to each. Thanks all!

Whichever school is the least painful commute.

You need to search each school separately. No one has attended all three.

They are all very good schools with a pretty diverse population (culturally, that is -- all have a solid international student presence because of proximity to embassies, parents who work for international organizations, etc. Murch is probably the most economically diverse because of the many apartment buildings and condos in its catchment). Eaton is very small, but will have a new renovation (that is eating into its already small outdoor space). Mann is a bit larger, also has a nice facility, I've heard that aftercare can be an issue. We're at Murch and are happy there. New renovation, decent but not amazing outdoor space. Nice teachers, reasonably chill parents, diverse student body, nice neighborhood feel. Not sure what the aftercare situation will be next year, but in the past there were two options across the street at St. Paul's. Our kid has had a very good experience there.

+1

They are all good schools. Pick the one that works for your commute (and aftercare options, if that matters to you).

Whichever one you actually get into! Is Hearst on your list?

For families that are at these schools, have you actually seen a lot of families leave the school this year or that plan to leave for next year? I feel like there is a lot of chatter on this board about folks fleeing DCPS, but hard to tell if that is actually happening. It doesn't seem like there are a ton of private openings for 1st grade.

We left for this past year from one of these schools, but are registered to return for the fall. This was purely based on the logistics of having one of our children be a kindergarten student while one parent was full time essential in the office and the other was trying to work full time at home. We otherwise really like the school and have had at least one child enrolled for the past 7 years.

We're at Murch, and I haven't seen or heard of any big exodus. Probably helps that everyone who wanted to be back in person in Term 4 is.

What difference does it make if DCPS can't figure out how to reopen?

Though middle school seems a long way off, might be worth considering that two of the schools feed to Hardy and one feeds to Deal. Good luck with wherever you land!
