We found our preferred breed and there was a pup available - location is just the issue. She's in Seattle.
The breeder said they've shipped their puppies with Alaska Air for 40 years with no issues. My husband is thinking of flying out with our 9 year old to pick her up and fly her home in-cabin. She'll be just 8 weeks old and she's a very large breed, but the breeder said they haven't had a dog denied at the gate for in-cabin flights. As a first time puppy parent, I'm at a loss. Should I ship her via plane, send the family to do it, or pay for pet land transport (if that's a thing across country?) Thanks! |
| send your husband to get the puppy. |
This. I’d feel horrible shipping a puppy across the country in the bottom of a plane. Make sure he’s got plenty of pee pads for the trip. |
| I don't see how it could fly in cabin. Surely it would be too large? I have a small breed that's about 10lbs and he barely fits under the seats. A puppy wouldn't be quiet or well behaved during the flight and would pee nonstop, which would be a disaster. I think it would be better for the dog to fly cargo in a huge crate with food. You'd have to do it right now though before it gets too hot. |

We went out to get ours and the puppy flew home no problem in cabin. 55lbs as an adult...
Our breeder wouldn't ship him. |
| There is NO WAY your DH and kid are going to be able to cut it with an 8 wk old puppy in cabin. That is 6+ hrs under the seat in front of you. Disaster. |
| Isn’t it too hot for pets to fly now under the plane? |
| How terrifying and traumatizing for an 8wk old puppy to be pulled from its litter mates, put in a box and shipped in the noisy belly of a plane for 6hrs. I can't imagine. Have your DH fly out. Crate underneath the seat. |
| There are no dogs on this side of the country that would work for your family?? |
| I would definitely fly in cabin. There have been many tragedies with puppies not making it due to conditions in the underbelly of the plane. Not to mention the immense trauma that will put the dog through at a formative age. Please don't do that! |
+1 WTH?? |
| Wouldn't the puppy cry and fuss the entire time? I feel sorry for everyone else on the plane. Though, the same would probably apply to a (hellishly long) road trip. And putting him in the cargo bay seems cruel. Honestly I would re-think this purchase and try to find a puppy closer to home. What breed is it? |
|
Absolutely not in cargo. Send DH/DK to pick up and fly in cabin. Use breeder's guidance.
I personally might use it as an excuse for a cross-country road trip, but that's just me. |
| Are you sure it will fit? And won't it cry the whole time? |
|
I would try to find a closer breeder.
If that’s out, see if they can drive half way and you drive halfway. Pay for the transport. If that’s out, fly there and pick up, fly back in cabin. But really, even if it means waiting longer, I would try another breeder. |
