AP Exam Question

DC knows that they will not do well on the AP Calc exam. I think they should just not show (can’t get refund, registration done through school). DC thinks that going and getting a 1 or 2 is better than not showing up at all.

What is the DCUM thought on this issue?

Is DC a senior? If so, no harm in taking and scoring low.

And if DC is a junior the only harm is that a 1 or 2 will be included in the tally that affects whether he/she is named an AP Scholar with Distinction, etc.

+1. You don't have to report AP scores on college applications.

You should be able to get a refund.

It will negatively affect the school/teacher averages. If he isn’t going to put effort into it, there is no reason to take it.

DC is a senior who is happy with their college choice. I’ll let them know that it is up to them as to whether or not they want to take the test. Personally, I wouldn’t want to waste a morning taking a test just to fail it but maybe they think differently.

As for it effecting the teacher- good. It was a class taken during first semester due to block schedule. Teacher checked out during second semester and didn’t provide any review or additional assignments to keep the students fresh while
Waiting to take the test. Average result of the mock exam was apparently a 1.8.

Would his school even give home credits if he scored a 4 or 5 by some miracle? If not, there is absolutely no reason to waste his time. The colleges don’t care at all and many don’t give credit anyway.

I think they should take the test to spite the teacher. But they may be a better person than I am.

I had this conversation with my junior about Macro Economics. They didn't even start the Macro portion until well into third quarter. There is zero chance of covering all the material. (Not to mention the fact that does he really remember the Micro stuff from earlier in the year??) But on the other hand, there won't be any meaningful classwork going on that day anyway, so he has been doing some khan academy prep and going to take it. I don't expect much.

Most people are if this is how you think in general. Have you considered therapy for your character defect? Wow.

dlDC is taking 5 and, as far as I can tell, is not putting much effort into studying. Probably a waste of money, but my thought is I guess we'll see what happens - maybe DC will get lucky on some.

Can someone please explain how the AP exams work, what is their purpose and advantage to the student if the score is not counted towards the GPA? Do colleges care?

Some do, some give college credit if you pass with a certain score determined by the college.

Or, more specifically, your kid still gets a 5 and they won’t take it for course credit, sometimes elective-only credit and often no credit at all. No, I’m not bitter☹️
