Colleges do not care about AP exam scores and do not take them into account when it comes to admissions. They only care that you're actually taking AP classes if they're offered at your school and doing well in them. Remember that most students will be taking half of their AP classes or more as seniors, and won't be taking the exams until they've already been admitted to colleges.

This isn't true - for students in private that took initiative to take an AP exam when the class wasn't designated as AP do get noticed. It's not a requirement but it shows initiative.

Many schools will give credits for AP exams where 4 or 5 is scored. For big schools, that means being able to register for classes earlier in the registration window.
