| I recently came across a video on Viola Davis’s insta account where I was in laughing uncontrollably at a reference to speaking in tongues. I grew up in the church although it’s been many years now. I never understood it as a child and I realized I dont really get it as an adult either! What is speaking in tongues exactly? Are the people doing it just copying what they hear others do? |
| It's when the Holy Spirit speaks through you. I've had it happen twice in my life decades ago. Can't explain it. I had no control over what I was saying in terms of what sounds came out. It wasn't like I was the most religious person. But it was a time when I was in deep prayer. |
| you should move this to religious forum |
No need to copy- just speak jibberish. |
Sounds like you were possessed. |

This happened to my mil when she was 25. She has bi polar disorder. |
| Research shows that the sounds that come out of people's mouths while they are "speaking in tongues" does not represent any language whatsoever - it is gobbledygook. This is of course conflicts with what the bible describes as speaking in tongues, which referred to people speaking other languages |

Yes, elevated to the status of "the Holy Spirit". |
| My perfectly sane friend speaks in tongues at her worship service on occasion. Although it’s not my cup of tea, judging people for how they choose to worship is intolerant and rude. We could dig into some very seemingly bizarre worship customs people embrace around the world and spend our time judging people and making fun of them, or we could be adults. Not everyone is like you. |

When people in biblical times heard it, they probably thought it was another language. |
yes, exactly.. it's when you are "possessed" by the Holy Spirit. |
I'm sure bipolar people do other things that you have also done, like maybe drink and do dumb things. But I'm sure you consider that "normal" behavior. |
