Dropping out of College

Anonymous
Nephew is a college at a regional school. He is dropping out after this semester (freshman year). Going to school during COVID is too depressing. Parents don’t have college degrees and could care less. Nephew has good GPA 3.7.

Do you think the drop out rate is going to be higher this year?

Encourage him to go back after a year or two.

I know a kid who did the exact same thing. Parents did not go to college. Frustrating situation

I'm on a facebook group for parents at my kid's school. There are many, many freshman who are not returning in the fall. A lot of them didn't even come back for spring semester.
It's really been a rough year.

I don’t know if Covid is the reason. I have a nephew that dropped out after one semester well before Covid. His parents did not go to college. Most of my in-laws also dropped out. Their parents did not value education and did not attend.

I think a lot of students are dropping out or just going home and going to a local college.

I’ve already talked with him about transferring to an instate school like James Madison or University of Mary Washington

Do you think it’s more students due to COVID?

I know someone who dropped out of college to go to machinist school. Her parents are college educated & were very disappointed, but she loves it and makes decent money.

If kids are dropping out and just drifting, though, I would worry.

Yes.

I have a freshman and the situation for some students was just too much. It was like prison.

If you were contact traced to a positive person you were put in a COVID dorm with no TV and just a bag of clothes, crappy food was delivered to your room.

I teach HS seniors and I have a fair number of students who are going to college but probably shouldn't. They can't write a coherent paragraph or do even basic algebra or in some cases, middle school math. They do not participate at all in class and seem to have no trace of intellectual curiosity.

I feel bad that they're going to shell out lots of money to do the same thing for a while longer.

Why colleges accept them if they will likely drop out? What kind of colleges?

If that happened to my DC I would drive to pick them up and bring them home for two weeks. If they became sick ai would want them home and if not, they wouldn’t be in the awful environment while doing online classes.

Nothing wrong with trying to find a job!! A routine among adults in any field can reset ones self confidence, earn a little cash, and point their direction back to college for the right reasons. Work is healthy!! Also how many periods in ones life is it fine to be a handyman, store clerk, restaurant server, receptionist, landscape assistant, delivery driver or volunteer - than when you aren’t even close to 25!
