Dropping out of College

A routine among adults in any field can reset ones self confidence, earn a little cash, and point their direction back to college for the right reasons. Work is healthy!! Also how many periods in ones life is it fine to be a handyman, store clerk, restaurant server, receptionist, landscape assistant, delivery driver or volunteer - than when you aren’t even close to 25!

The problem is most of the kids don’t go back that drop out.

If kids are dropping out and just drifting, though, I would worry.

Agreed. Trade school is a great option for many and good for her that she recognized she wanted something different. It’s not an easy thing to do in a society that says college is the only option and anyone who doesn’t go is stupid or unambitious.

They can't write a coherent paragraph or do even basic algebra or in some cases, middle school math. They do not participate at all in class and seem to have no trace of intellectual curiosity.

I feel bad that they're going to shell out lots of money to do the same thing for a while longer.

Why colleges accept them if they will likely drop out? What kind of colleges?

Maybe they can instead defer a year. Most colleges are amenable to this, and welcome back a more focused student. A year at home loafing with mom and dad may just be the motivator.

100% due to Covid. I had to convince my son to stay home and continue with online classes. First semester was a joke.

Both my siblings are college aged. One dropped out, the other is one of very few of his friends still in it.

+1 million. The trades are begging to give people training in skills that will pay good $$ without college debt. These jobs require intelligence and aren’t for losers. I’m all for making college accessible, but convincing people that they are failure if they don’t go to college was one of the stupidest things our politicians have ever done.

A lot of people normally drop out freshman year. They've picked the wrong school or college is just not for them, or they wanted others things from college than studying and Covid. Many guys (and girls) need something more physical at that age, like a trade.

Maybe talk to your nephew about deferring for a year while he tries something else. His parents may not know that is an option.
