Do I Spend Too Much on Clothes??

Anonymous
I think I may be addicted to shopping. I was just looking at the last year's worth of credit card purchases and see that I spend about $3,500 a year on clothes for myself. Mind you, it is all from mid-market places, like Ann Taylor, J. Crew, Old Navy, DSW etc. This seems like a heck of a lot. It boils down to a couple of purchases a month (of several items per purchase). I am just wondering what others spend. FYI - I work PT in a business casual (very casual) environment, so I am really spending $$ on casual clothes, not nice suits.

I don't think that's too much. I spend about the same or maybe even a little more. I don't think I have a lot of new clothes every season but that's probably because I spend more money per item... all on sale though.

I think it depends on how much discretionary income you have. Do you carry credit card debt because of these purchases? You might also try to invest in a couple of really nice pieces that will last you a long, long time, than in trendier pieces at Old Navy, etc.

Its only too much if you can't afford it.

Wow, that's an amazing amount of money to spend on clothes for sure, but if you can afford it and don't have more pressing uses for the money, then what can anyone say?

$70 a week on clothing seems a little high. But hey, if you're making $350k/yr, whatever.

Our whole FAMILY probably spends that much on clothes per year, but then money is tight and we'd like freedom to spend a little more.

Well, if you include shoes, I easily spend $200/month on average, or $2400/year, and I also don't buy anything extravagent, so my answer is no.

I work in scrubs, DH in suits.
That's exactly how much we spent last year for both of us

I think someone who makes close to $100K could easily spend $70 a week on clothes, assuming they have the rest of their budget straight. But who knows, around here, people have to spend > 40% of their gross income on housing alone, which is super high.

I think it sounds about right! Depends on what you make, of course...I don't spend that much, but I am still hoping to lose baby weight from 2 years a ago (seriously )

wooow sure makes me feel poor, I spent that much money on clothes over the last 10 years. But I think PPs are right, if you can afford it, there's nothing wrong with that at all.

I have spent 200 a year on clothes, maybe 300. Then again, that is what I can afford and shows the priority i put on that. 3500 seems like a lot, but if you can afford it, why should what i think matter?

I don't think 300 a month is out of line, if you can afford it.

I should start spending some $ on clothes. I started working from home a few years ago and I rarely spend too much...i usually will get somethign nice before an event like a wedding, etc...or if there is a special night out a new top, etc...but I go to the gym in the morning and then i'm in the house at my computer all day. I throw whatever on to pick up older son at preschool....

but I think I am really letting myself go in the fashion dept. I am sure you look much better than I do!
