I need something larger than Mazda5 but not as gigantic feeling as a Hylander or Palisades

What are some good options? Need something tween friendly (car pool), but need to fold down all seats to move things ideally such as for home improvement brick/2x4 type material. What are some good options for under $40K?

You are not hauling uncut 2x4 in any SUV this side of an extended Suburban.

If you just want an SUV of some sort, checkout the Mazda CX7 and CX9. Be warned that the CX9 is the size of a Highlander/Palisade but looks more svelt because of it's more tucked styling.

A Highlander or Palisade is certainly NOT “gigantic”.

I don't think you're going to find many options. Most of the car companies go from CRV to Pilot; RAV4 to Highlander, etc.

Tesla model Y will give you the ability to haul lumber and it’s not as big as the Highlander or Palisades.

I had a Chevy Equinox for many years and hauled 2x4's. No big deal.

I think Consumer Reports said Subaru Forester had the most usable cargo capacity of a compact SUV-- I know it felt that way for ours.

They’re full of crap. I have a 2018 Forester and it doesn’t have nearly the usable space that the 2011 Honda CRV that it replaced.

I have this, but it’s probably larger than what OP wants.

I am shopping for this size (bigger than rav4/CRV/cx5 and smaller than Highlander/Palisade/cx9) and the top 3 (non-luxury) options I found were Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Kia Sorento. Sorento and Santa Fe were very similar but more recently redesigned than the Edge.

Also drove the Forester and really liked it, but it’s a tad smaller than those 3 and we wanted the extra size.

DP and I agree but I think something this size is where OP will end up. The smaller SUV’s are not any bigger than a Mazda5.
