With crime increasing why is our city council softening its response?

Crime has increased over 30% since the pandemic has started. Carjackings are up. Way up. Why the push for “slap on the wrist”, or no punishment for teen offenders? Why aren’t we being real about this? It will take the city back to 1988 when murders were on par with failing nations?

Why the Youth Rehabilitation Act? Why the legislation to release violent offenders early? I hate Trump. I hated Barr. However, I can’t help but fear they were right to propose get tough on crime policy. Even the Atlantic notes that tough policing worked. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/03/is-americas-great-crime-decline-over/618381/

None of this matters. Apparently it’s racist to propose actual policing of violent areas. What is being excessively woke leads to non-crime committing, tax paying, citizens leaving the city and helping to hollow out the tax base again? More importantly, why can’t we have a real discussion about this? It impacts you and me. Do you like fearing for your life, your property and your kids? Sorry.

I agree with you. And Trump got 70 million votes nationwide in part because there are a lot of people who agree that “woke” crime policies are moronic. Couple the Youth Rehabilitation Act with a CPS policy that promotes family reunification as the preferred policy in most circumstances ensures that poorly parented young offenders are continually re-released into the environments which produced them.

Obviously we should defund the police & cancel school forever. I used to consider myself liberal, but I just can’t anymore. Idiots.

I think the punishment should be taken a step further and should extend to parents too. Community service for both?

Democrats. You get what you vote for. Or buy into.

I agree that the parents have failed and bear some responsibility. However, that would only lead to the parent(s) losing their job and then the entire family is effed with no chance of redemption. I don’t know what the answer is. Fix it at the root. That will involve some very difficult work that nobody wants to do.

This is the issue, isn't it.

If the kids are kids and can't be trusted to show good judgement, blah blah blah, so we can't possibly give them adult sentencing, fine. But that means that their parents are responsible for supervising these kids and making sure they aren't out carjacking people.

People will do a better job of parenting when they know that THEY will be thrown in prison if they don't. Or they'll decide not to have children when they don't have a husband, don't have a stable home, or don't have means to support the child and raise it properly.

P.S. For this to work, I think parents should be able to put out of control kids into a residential military camp for kids, where they just have the military structure/environment/community when they're minors and could serve once they're old enough if they don't have another job.

Agree with OP. City is way too lenient on crime. They let the little stuff slide, then people get emboldened and do what they want.. run lights, speed, shoot guns in the air, rob people....

The mayor do not allow the police to do their job. its sad but true. ask any cop off the record and they will tell you that they can't do their job.

It's so easy for all of you to anonymously pontificate using thinly veiled racial undertones and while knowing or caring nothing about the horrific circumstances that these kids face. Some, for example, have been living with grandparents while going to school -- except now they can't go to school and their caregivers are disproportionately dying of covid. I'd like to see how you all would have handled similar hardship. So far as I'm concerned, it's a miracle we're not seeing even more crime than we are.

How bout we open schools so they have something positive to do?

Oh, please. Lot's of people face hardship but they don't go out to carjack and kill people.

We need the center to come back. Common sense and no left/right gibberish.

They have agency and the ability to tell right from wrong. I have handled plenty of hardship without turning into a shit.

Ummm most teens would do stupid teen stuff like underage drinking, smoking pot, maybe light shoplifting. No one is disputing that we need to be more lenient on that stuff with teens/people in general if not repeat offenders. Most teens would not commit random assaults or muggings or kill a guy in a carjacking. Wtf is wrong with you that you think that kind of stuff is normal.
