Good match schools?

Anonymous
Hi, my DD is a junior with a 1540 SAT and 3.9 UW 4.7 W GPA, committed to one long term extracurricular and holds leadership positions and is highly involved with several clubs and organizations that all follow a common thread, and relate to what she wants to specialize in. She really does not know what would be a match for her, and is starting to become stressed about applying to the wrong schools. She doesn't have any size preference, but would prefer urban/suburban and non-southern schools. Any advice?

Look at US News national universities ranking, 25-50s. Look for schools with acceptance rates (at least in normal, non-covid times, so college class of 2024 and earlier) that are 25-50%.

This may seem like a narrow list, but schools with low acceptance rates are reaches for all.

Also see the LAC ranking of course, looking beyond the top 10-ish.

She's been looking at tufts and Rochester, so she will probably apply to those but she doest think shell get into tufts or Wesleyan. She doesn't want to stay in the DMV area, so American and Georgetown are out. She also wants to go to a coed school, so Wellesley is out. I will have her look into Barnard, thank you for the suggestions!

thank you for these suggestions, I will have her look into them! She is looking at some lacs, but many of them seem to be too rural for her taste.

It would help to know the following:

Does she need financial aid or merit aid to attend?

What schools does she have in mind for her reaches?

She needs some merit aid, but not a lot.

For her reaches she is in love with brown and Amherst, but we know that's huge lottery. Also on her list are Carnegie Mellon and case western reserve, both as reaches. The only school she is thinking of as a match is northeastern. Thank you!

My son with similar stats is looking at Boston College, Villanova, Lehigh, Tufts, Bowdoin and William and Mary as matches. Vanderbilt, Dartmouth, Penn as reaches. After hearing what a s-show kids this year have been experiencing with admissions, I have no idea if he's on the right track or not. It all seems like a crap shoot.

She has a very solid chance of getting in at Ivys/comps with a well-crafted application. Read everything on college essay guy's site. Devote time and effort into the essays and rest of the application this summer. Good luck.

Stats don’t mean anything anymore. It’s all a gamble.

I do like College Essay Guy, and DC even took his class over the summer, which was super helpful to get applications/essays done with relatively little stress. That said, DC has similar high stats and was mostly waitlisted at the top schools applied to this year. So take "a very solid change of getting in at Ivys/comps" with a grain of salt. A good application helps maximize chances, but chances are low even for very well qualified students.

If she likes Amherst, she can take classes there as a Smith or Mt Holyoke student. My DD didn’t think she’d like single sex but once she visited, added to her list. Also, non-east coast schools may be a good option, if she’s open to them. My DD ended up in the Midwest and is very happy there. A bit more collaborative/non-competitive atmosphere.
