Looking for an electric SUV

Which ones are already in the market? Do you have any recommendations?

I like the energy saving concept but I am weary of the magnetic field exposure while driving.

We just got the Audi e-tron and I LOVE it. It’s a small suv (no third row, so if that’s a deal-breaker, consider it), but has lots of trunk space as well as space under the hood where the engine would go, and seats are roomy. It is a blast to drive, and I just love that it’s electric. I posted on here a month or so ago asking about leasing vs buying an electric car. We ended up leasing due to the probably advancement of technology in a few years in electric cars. Tesla’s were out of our price range, which would be the only electric I would really consider buying.

^ This X 1. I clicked on here to say this. If you can swing it, the Audi etron is amazing. I have owned a Model 3 and ('16) and sold it for my '19 etron and the car is amazing.

A few things. If you want just unparalleled acceleration, the Audi is not your car. It has fantastic acceleration, but it is HEAVY. The car weighs close to 6000 lbs...yes...6000! Even after saying that it is nimble and will shock you how quick it is, but it is not Tesla ludicrous or anything like that (Which you will use once if you buy a Tesla)

Do not sweat the Tesla claims that Audi does not have the range. While the statement is factually true, Audi compensates for it range by having an insanely stable charging curve. It can maintain 150kW charging speed until 90%. Other manufacturers cannot touch that (Taycan is very similar but they are related companies)

If you are looking at an EV you really need to have an outlet installed in your garage or wherever you are charging. At the end of the day, 99% of your time charging will most likely be at your house in the middle of the night. Your car will come with a charger, but not the outlet to plug it into. You will also eventually buy a third party charger because it will have further option you will be interested in (WiFi control and demand use charging etc...)

But at the end of the day if you want the quietest EV with the best driving experience and the best suspension and the best interior, go test drive an etron today. You will be stunned by how quiet driving can actually be.

(I am going to throw this disclaimer out now: The etron is built on an ICE platform which has been modified to be a pure EV. This means that some of those 6000 lbs is due to there not being an engine and transmission in the car to add rigidity. That and the battery is very heavy requiring further reinforcement. The first PURE EV designed by Audi will be released next year and will be called something like the e-tron Q6 and will be built on the PPE (Premium Platform Electric) which is the same platform that Porsche is designing the Electric Macan on. Point being that the etron is an AMAZING EV, however, it is built on an ICE platform and there are a few compromises because of that. I would say that this will not impact your love for the car, but Tesla people love pointing out that the current etron is not a built from the ground up EV.)

We have a Tesla Model X and love it. Has three rows, options for 5, 6, or 7 seats, hauls a ton, super safe, crazy fun to drive.

I've heard good things about the Y, too, although it's a bit smaller.

Silly question: Do you have small kids? Is there enough space for car seats? I thought the Model X was a sedan but 7 seats!!

We have a Tesla S & I am now in the market for an electric SUV. I read an article recently that said that for travel, only Teslas work with the chargers currently available on the road (Tesla has by far the most built-out grid with its Supercharger network). I was going to look at the Audi & other brands but that convinced me to stay looking at Teslas. I am not sure I can hang with the gull wing doors on the X tho...

The supercharger network is great, but EA is an alternative and it works across the country. It still is not plug and charge but if you are letting that dissuade you over EA compatible cars, you really do not know much about how EV's work.

Tesla currently has an edge for charging networks especially in the west and for coast to coast, but the thing is it will be every other car company plus the federal govt vs Tesla in coming years and I don’t see any way that is a meaningful advantage for Tesla in the future.

I had an EV on a three year lease and I know just in that 3 years the number of fast chargers in the DC area and on the east coast generally went from very few to a ton, and the momentum for new charging stations is just increasing.

Just because it’s an electric SUV doesn’t mean it’s not still killing the planet.

Their added mass means they’re require far more energy to move around than a small electric car. And all that extra energy used to charge a single electric suv means that other electricity (generated by fossil fuels) will have to be supplied to do the other things that the electric suv is using up the electricity for.

Get a Leaf. Small and sensible and efficient. And you won’t be using your fellow motorists as crumple zones to protect yourself in a crash at the expense of other people getting hurt more than you.
