ECNL moving to school year not calendar

ECNL going to SY with GY showcases GA staying birth year but adding biobanding you heard it here first.

This is very likely

This is more unlikely. Teams won’t morph for showcases alone. GA will do what ECNL does on the girls side, regardless of what MLSN does. MLSN and GA are not so connected that they have to do the same thing. ECNL isn’t that flexible because they have boys and girls clubs. It makes more sense for ECNL and GA on the girls side to do the same thing, which is SY, since there is a much more realistic path to playing college soccer on the girls side. Not as much on the boys.

That depends on the club more than likely 95% of teams will be in the same grad year with the 9/1 cut off. But if August kids are out of grad year alignment this could address the issue.

I would say it is more likely ECNL allows GY showcases and then puts it on the clubs to deal with how they decide to roster their players.

Yes, or 10-month ENCL and GA stay BY.

What's 10-month ECNL?

Teams that play a full 10 month calendar and don't pause for school sports.

ECNL will not make girls skip high school.

They will not. But even DA gave waivers.

What I've seen is girls getting demoted to a lower team when they wanted to play HS

Yep. Because HS soccer sucks. And kids that won’t sacrifice HS soccer for club soccer should be tiered with other similar kids who are less dedicated to competing at the highest level.

I literally know of USYNT kids who play high school. Why? Cause is fun. And they are kids. People on this thread generalize too much

Name them

There is one girl in YNT and play HS in San Diego. She had one clip broadcast on TV, and my daughter was the background unfortunately. My daughter also faced another YNT in the HS CIF playoff, who later committed to Stanford.

The ones from City SC or SD Surf?

GA is in this weird place where if they switch to SY they will just continue to be the second option behind ECNL. Where if they stay BY would be their own thing that is totally separate. They would also bring in better players as they would be the destination for January to July players.

If they try and not let girls play high school it would be the end of them for California teams.

They need really put a lot of thought and strategic planning into this decision.

Both are from Surf ECNL. My daughter defended both very well. She is Q4. If ECNL was SY when she started, she might be able to join a top team and have a chance to play in a good D3 school.

When you're that good I'm sure you can do what you want and it'll be celebrated (and good for them!). For those edge players working hard just to make the teams, it can be a different story.

Edge players not getting recruited D1 anyways. So why not play high school and enjoy yourself.

But in NorCal all the top ECNL or at least the vast majority of girls play high school. It would be a big issue for GA if they tried to deny players from high school.

Because HS isn't necessarily fun OR offers a chance to improve AND because of uneven levels of play, can cause unnecessary injuries.

Oh, and I forgot, to mention how it can work when a kid says they want to play HS, where a 10-month program simply offers a spot on another team at the club while having high-level replacements ready to take the kid's spot on the top team... Not technically forced from playing HS BUT great real world, lesson, I guess.

If it’s the one I think you’re referring to, she played one season of HS during covid…my
DD is in YNT two years down and knows her.

I think GA is not in a position right now to try and go against the grain too much, especially since it’s a relatively young league still working on getting established. If it were to stay BY in the face of ECNL going SY, that could be a big blow. And where is this talk about them not letting kids play high school coming from? That’s old DA stuff.

People not intimately involved with youth soccer will view leagues aligned with school grade as more remedial. They will also view leagues aligned with BY as being more professional.

We all know why people want to change from BY to SY. People outside the youth soccer bubble won’t understand and you won’t be able to explain it to them.

The person that thinks switching to SY will kill BY is going to be big upset when it doesn’t happen.

Again, if you are good enough to be on the YNT, you have the power to play HS. You have likely a choice of whatever elite club you want to play for and possibly a chance go pro. If you are a kid who has a goal of D1 and is good enough to get on a top ECNL team or club but it's not guaranteed, playing HS really depends on your coach and club. And chances are many will advise/discourage you from playing HS. That's the current youth soccer culture in the area I live in.

Players and parents who are afraid to lose their ECNL or GA spot because of HS. Your kid is not D1 level. If your kid was, their teams coaches would let you do whatever you wanted.

Not fear. It's what they are told. (And the latest example I know of just signed with a d1 school).

Independence HS (NoVA) is filled with ECNL players, most of which are committed to play in college.
