Why would the FBI want the cameras shut off?

That seems very suspicious.

FBI has their own cameras recording. They want security cams shut off so that no one on the outside can watch them searching and collecting. This is SOP.

The occupants of the house are not allowed to be inside during a search. The FBI doesn't want them watching the cams from the outside during the search or videos of their techniques getting out .

IME, each seizing agent has two camera people with them, one for photos and one for video. The seizing agent is the only one who collects the items on the warrant. The other agents look for and find the items, but the seizing agent is the only one who will touch, collect, and catalogue the items. This is to protect the chain of custody. And while the seizing agent is doing so, the cameras are rolling. The agents looking for evidence and items also have cameras on them. Depending on the size of the search, there can be multiple seizing agents, too.

But for those thinking that the FBI agents just rush in and start tossing everything like on TV shows and bagging and tagging everything, it's not like that at all. Searches are very orderly and organized. Every agent has a specific room/area that they're assigned to.

After the search, a detailed list of every item is left with the occupant, though. They'll know right when it's over what was seized by the agents. There's no "we don't know what they took!" outrage possible because if something comes up later at a trial that wasn't on the list of items seized, it can be thrown out.

Thank you for this description. It's also been reported that FBI used taint teams during the search, to avoid taking privileged documents.

The National Security Division/Counterintelligence Section requested that the basement storage locker be secured. This is unprecedented in US history. And in a written response Trump — through his lawyers — gave what was tantamount to the double bird, even though they put on a bigger lock. Trumpworld was itching for a fight.

The lock they installed was so good they had to break the doorframe itself to gain entry.

A taint team would have been very prudent but likely was accomplished by using agents from the Miami field office as the investigation and grand jury is being run out of DC.

IF this is a big deal and shows Trump was colluding with Russia (which is what all you LWNJ are saying), then why has it been all nicey nicey for weeks between Trump and DOJ until now. If, on the other hand, this is about returning documents to the national archives, then this is so much overreach that it is in fact the bullying of a potential political rival. Garland said the warrant was necessary because it wasn't possible to any other route. He is saying that this was the ONLY way to move ahead. Garland just put himself into a tiny box.

Huh? Are the voices in your head too loud?

This has been going on for over 18 months. In June there was a subpoena and then a cordial face to face in which Trump declared his intent to not return the documents. It took about a month after that for a warrant application to be written up, signed off on, approved and then executed. There is nothing strange at all about this series of events except for Trump's desire to not follow the law.

How much do you think he shredded and trashed during that month? If he didn't, he's a bigger idiot than I thought.

Not much. They know what documents he had and the custodians, as well as him, would all be on the hook for their destruction had he done so.

You are right it is unprecedented. No one ever came after Big O even though he took lots of documents. No one asked Hillary to lock down her servers. This kind of "zealousness" is reserved for Republicans. And it is why it is so clearly a witchhunt to those of us who were politically aware before 2016.

Absofrigginlutetly.

But this new precedent will be useful when Republicans start having the FBI kick down the doors of various dems in a couple years.

Sure. Just try not to shoot up any FBI field offices, ok?

Uhh. You are so thick. They asked him to put a lock on it. And he did and showed confirmation of the lock. That implies they will tell him what to do with the documents next. And they didn't. And they didn't come back until the raid. I mean, let's assume all the material is classified. If so, H=he SHOULD keep them safe and they should only be transferred to those with an appropriate clearance with appropriate chain of custody. He can't just put the documents in the mail or send them with UPS. SO if it is true that DOJ said "put a lock on them" and he did that, then if they didn't follow up with more instruction and jumped to a raid, this is crazy.

The bolded is false. There were several meetings between the DOJ and Trump's attorneys about this.

Judge demonstrates minor annoyance DOJ failed to meet and confer with opposing counsel prior to filing its motion. But had it done so it would have ceded the benefit of filing the motion and today’s announcement while Trump dragged his feet. Well played. Trump now has to sh+t or get off the pot by tomorrow.

The funniest part of this process is where they cast about for a new story line after the old one is blown up, and before they are given their talking points.
