Santa Cruz is now a "destination" -- where else should we look

We are Bay Area residents but our jobs are now remote. We are looking in Santa Cruz, but apparently every FAANG employee has decided they want a home near the beach too, and we are being out bid on $1M houses by $200k.

He’s also seeing Silicon Valley workers hunting more aggressively in Santa Cruz. Tech workers have been less concerned about commutes during work-from-home routines, he said.
Wang said buyers have been quickly upping bids $50,000 and $100,000 without hesitation. “There’s no rhyme, no reason behind it,” Wang said.
He added, “the sad part is, not everybody can play in this market.”

Given that reality, what is a hidden gem of an area that is perhaps not as trendy or popular with the FAANG crowd, but has similar access to nature and surfing? Any recommendations?

Budget is $1m; we can go further south, but we have loads of family in the Valley and San Francisco so would like to have reasonable access there?

Any chance things will get less crazy after pandemic? SF commercial real estate is at 20% vacancy, won't that eventually trickle down?

Coastal communities close to SV will always demand a premium price.

Holy cow, just outbid on a house listed at $1M but sold at $1.4M. Is this the new normal?

Carmel. It has permanent value.

Marina, Seaside, Sand City, Monterey are cheaper options too.

SLO is only about 3 hrs, if you don’t want the city life except that your 2 day a month office is there

I’d buy in pescadero or Carmel valley

Half Moon Bay? Weather is not as nice; buy a plot of land and build your own.

Yes this. Or even further south to Pismo (and go to LA for nightlife etc which is far more cosmopolitan than the City)
