| Dunn Loring seems to have great schools, a nice community plus good access to metro and shops etc. We’re a liberal-leaning, foreign-born family and have kids in lower elementary. Anyone could please share a bit about their experience living in Dunn Loring? Much appreciated! |
| Then, you will fit right in. We have lived in the area for over 13 years and we love. Very diverse area, very family friendly and great schools. Not which schools you are looking at but my kids went to Stenwood and we were very happy there. Great teachers and admin, and very supportive PTA. The area is centrally located to all the major highways and Metro (if you have to commute to DC). |
Oh, also keep in mind there is going to be some re-zoning happening, probably in the next 3-5 years, as the Dunn Loring Center is going to be converted to an elementary school. More than likely kids from Stenwood, Freedom Hill and others may get pulled in. |
It's actually Shrevewood ES that needs capacity relief, but because the School Board member is a tool who wanted to keep a dog park further west in Oakton open, more kids than otherwise would have needed to move will end up getting redistricted out of Stenwood to Dunn Loring (and it will be at least 4-5 years, not 3). |
| It's a convenient location and great selection of ethnic grocery stores and restaurants. Not too far from DC. Mosaic district is the effective downtown/social center. INOVA Fairfax is nearby and so are a myriad of medical offices. You'd also be close to Tysons, Vienna, and Falls Church. Overall we really enjoy living in the area. |
| What do people mean by Dunn Loring? I know there is a very small area with a Dunn Loring zip code (22027) but are they really just referring to areas around the Dunn Loring metro station, regardless of mailing address? |
| In the condos/apartments? or are there SFHs? |
| I was expecting to see them rename stonewall manor after the HS kids petition and was disappointed that they did not. So I was hesitant to buy there even though I know a few people who live there that definitely aren’t confederate sympathizers, it seemed an odd thing to hold on to |
The two students (they were in college, not high school) wanted them to rename the neighborhood and many streets within it. Perhaps name change fatigue seeped in. Did they go ahead and remove the bas-relief busts of Stonewall Jackson from the entrances? There seemed to be more support for doing that. |

We are looking at a house zoned for Stenwood, and youngest will be in K next year so I’m a bit worried she’ll get impacted by the rezoning, but I guess such is life.
DL seems a bit more liberal than other areas, and that was a plus for us. Is there a plan on which areas will move to the new Dunn Loring school? |
| Also, looks like the new Stenwood Principal, promoted from Assistant Principal is great! |
There are no definite dates or which streets will be impacted b the boundary changes. If you are affected by the boundary changes, you can petition to be grandfathered in, so your daughter would not have to move schools. |
Yes, the old principal, Dammeyer, retired a couple of years ago. Ms. Riley was promoted to principal. |
It will be years before the old school is renovated and a redistricting plan announced, but given Dunn Loring's location anything zoned to Stenwood that's north of Idylwood, and perhaps north of the W&OD trail, stands to be reassigned there. Also look for anything west of 495 currently zoned to Shrevewood to move to Stenwood. It's likely the boundaries of Cunningham Park and/or Freedom Hill will also be affected, but if/how is less clear. |
Usually only rising 6th graders are grandfathered when they change an elementary school assignment, although if there is space they will look favorably on keeping kids at a school with their siblings. |
