What worked best for you: safety rails on toddler bed

Anonymous
We’re transitioning our 3 year old from a crib to a toddler bed soon. The bed has a footboard and short safety rails on both sides of the headboard. My DD is an all-over-the-place sleeper so I want to get some type of extra rail for safety.

What worked best for you all? A pool noodle or under-fitted sheet bumper? Or a soft mesh safety rail? Something else? Product names and brands appreciated!

Note: I’m specifically looking for input from parents who have used safety rails on beds for their children. We have already purchased a toddler bed. It will be on a toddler bed frame. Respectfully, I’m NOT looking for opinions about how toddler beds are not worth the cost, or that Montessori style floor beds are the way to go, or why don’t you just put your child in a twin bed or a full bed they can grow with etc. I’m looking for input from people who have specifically used bed rails on some type of traditional bed for their children when transitioning out of a crib. Thanks!

You don’t need it for a toddler bed.

We use a soft bumper and it works great.

The toddler bed with the half length rails will be fine. Toddler beds are very low to the ground, too, so there's really no safety concern related to falling out.

Toddler beds are not traditional beds. They are lower to the ground and already have those short safety rails. Nothing else is needed.

The safety rails on the bed are sufficient. Have her lie down on the bed - you'll see how well the rails keep her from rolling out.

I’m gonna say it.... skip the toddler bed and go to a twin bed. We put pool noodles under our 2 year olds twin sheet when she went to a twin. She never fell out.

Mom of 4 here: you do not need anything additional.

Why do people say this? I have three children and I'm still learning. You can have 4 children and still be a nitwit.

OP, my children have full and queen size beds with privacy pops on them.

We got an extra crib mattress. She used it for her reading area by day, and we put it beside her bed by night. Within a few months she stopped flopping out of bed.

If you get a regular sized bed- beddys bed sheets worked really well. We zippered our kids in and they stayed in while learning to transition to a twin. We transitioned at 3.5 both times and straight to a twin. No bed rails or anything. None fell out of bed

I think you will be fine with just the toddler bed guards you already have? My daughter always did fine with those. I'm not sure she's an "all over the place sleeper," but one time she slept on a pull out mattress in a motel and when we woke up she was horizontal and her legs were halfway off the bed, so....

We moved my DD to a toddler bed at 20 months. She has never fallen out. The rails are enough.

I might wait to see if he actually falls out with the existing rail.

If you want to add one it is just really dependent on what bed you bought and what will fit on it. I wouldn't overthink it too much.
