New to the area and trying to understand AAP process.
My kid is in 2nd grade. Teachers referred for AAP Level IV. I requested a copy of the file. What would be considered a low NNAT score? Kid took that test on 1st grade. GBRS has 4 consistently observed, DRA level 28, and tested at grade 4 level for math. Work samples included are assignments done with AART teacher. If the NNAT is low, does my kid have a chance to get in? |
| If the teacher referred, you’re probably OK. |
|
Teacher referral + 4 consistently observed = IN. The NNAT won't matter at all.
The equity report showed that GBRS was by far the most significant factor. NNAT scores were largely ignored. |
| Your kid is really good virtually. It sucks to be an equally as bright kid who can't sit still in front of virtual. |
| IN!!!!!!!! |
Yes, our kid was referred by teacher. The school just asked if we wanted to fill out a parent questionnaire though it was optional. |
Thank you for your feedback. I will have to look at the file again, I think the teacher just wrote a few sentences on the recommendation. The school provided a lot of comments on the GBRS. |
The Teachers work with the AART to write the GBRSs. I found them most enlightening. I think it is great that your Teacher referred your child, I don't hear a lot of that happening in any year. Normally the in-pool test scores are 132 on the NNAT or any sub-section of the CoGAT. |
So this year the virtual thing is going to be the go to explanation for why kids don't get in. Normally it is "My child is bored so they are acting out and the Teacher doesn't see them for the genius they are." Or "My kid is a genius and bored so they don't do the work and the Teacher doesn't see them as the genius that they are." Or "My kid is quiet and not a suck up so the Teacher doesn't see them as the genius that they are". I will say that normally it is one of the first two options. But this year they can all be combined into one "Virtual is awful" category. DS is in Third, there are plenty of kids who are participating in class and break out groups. I would guess that those are the same kids who would have been participating in class in person. The class had a good amount of activity in second when Distance Learning started. I am sure that the AAP Committee is expecting a spike in the number of applications from third grade next year. |
Thank you for providing a range for the in-pool test scores. |

I also have a question about this process.
My child took WPPSI-IV test this January, and has scored very well. But due to covid problems we are thinking of sending her to private ES next year and possibly keep her there until public schools return to fully normal. If she ends up staying in private until 2nd grade, does anyone know whether I can use the WPPSI-IV she took as a 5 year old, to apply for AAP at FCPS in the fall of 2nd grade? This is a question I can ask the AAP office, but I doubt they will have time to answer this question which is a low priority for them at this moment. That's why I am asking here. Thank you very much. |
| The prefered test is the WISC. I think you can submit other tests but I don't know how they are looked at by the committee. |
| I looked into this a while ago and IIRC there was not cutoff, but something from same year as application is preferred (more current). As pp noted WISC is also the preferred test, but it’s not required either. |
| WPPSI is not on the list of accepted tests. |
