Frustrated w Starbucks app and charge to decrease pumps of sugar

Anonymous
My DC occasionally enjoys a mixed tea/lemonade at Starbucks. The standard mix is too sweet, so we adjust the pumps of sugar. Today I noticed that there is now a 50-cent charge to adjust the sugar. Last week there wasn’t. I called a Starbucks and the barista said there wouldn’t be a charge if I ordered in person. Has anyone seen this? I’m not adding an ingredient. I’m just decreasing the number of pumps.

That's weird. I occasionally order the iced passion tea with 1 pump and have never seen that before. But I just went on the app and added 2 of those teas, with the the standard 4 pumps and 1 with 1 pump, and sure enough the one pump is 50 cents more. It didn't make that adjustment on an iced coffee though.

Well that makes me mad. They’re charging you more for less product being used. Because not everyone wants super sweet drinks? Hmm I may need to write to corporate for this even though I only get Starbucks once in awhile!

Complain about that here. That’s really something they should fix about the app.

I just checked my app and it did not show a charge. I added one drink that was regular pumps and another that had ,2 less pumps and they are the same price.

I don’t know how many pumps are in anything. It’s fascinating.

OP here. It doesn’t seem consistent across all categories of drinks. And you can add sweetener and creamer to coffee for no charge at all.

The app is kind of fun. You can decrease ice, increase temperature, etc. and make the drinks less sweet!

May want to check to see if there is an update to the app and download it.

I get that any customization causes time and more likely for there to be errors, but that is ridiculous in this case.

I know. What on Earth is a pump of sugar?

My app is up to date and the same charge shows up if I request less sugar.

Probably liquid sugar (syrup).

The better question would be, how can you be sure that overwhelmed or careless Starbucks employees pay attention to every minute customization of your drink order?

The tickets are pretty straightforward and so many drinks are customized that they should be attuned to looking at the printed label. I always remove at least one pump of the sweetener - I like some flavor to the drink, but as regularly made they are just too sweet for me.

It’s not that difficult. Have a little faith. - a former barista

The flavored syrups. Decreasing the pumps of caramel or mocha or whatever your flavor of choice is, is a great way to cut sweetness and calories. Our family enjoys Starbucks as a treat. By using nonfat milk, one pump of syrup instead of the normal three or four, and eliminating whipped cream it’s a much more reasonable treat and not as much of a sugar bomb.
