High-stat kids w/o great college options

Anonymous
It seems like there are a lot of high-stat kids that were rejected or deferred from Ivy and even top-tier (second-tier?) schools. Where do they have acceptances, if any? With the unpredictability of this year, could some of these students be locked out of Top 30 or 50 schools? Are some considering gap years or other alternatives?

Why is that? Poor essays? Lukewarm recommendations?

This isn't new. The top 100-150 schools are great and there are high stat kids at all of them.

This is why your kid has a couple of real safeties. 75% stats and 50%+ acceptance. An Ivy, and increasingly T30 are always lotteries. So yes, T100, non-flagship in state, below 30 in LACs...

T100 = LAC 31 and below? just curious.

FWIW, it's early yet. DD applied to SLACs and won't hear from most for another month.

Yes— it’s February! Really doubt high stats kids won’t find somewhere that wants them

How will taking a gap year help? Applying again next year after doing what exactly, will strengthen the application?

Gap years are usually declared after one is admitted and files to defer matriculation.

DC applied to 3 schools in the T10 (results expected in a month or so), a handful in the t20-30 range and a few below T30 (high ranked for STEM). Got into most except for those that are very highly ranked for STEM (think CMU/Georgia Tech).. I'm sure everyone is doing something similar. A real contender for T20 does not have to apply to schools in the 100s.

If your kid was rejected from GA Tech or CMU , your kid can forget too 10.

There are so many great college options out there. The key is to apply to them. Look at the other schools in state. Look at the big state schools in the midwest. Look at LACs in Ohio. Look at Penn State or University of Delaware.

The Top 30 schools are ALWAYS crap shoot schools. The 30-50 schools are sometimes crap shoot. Look down the list. There are plenty.

I’ve always thought of T10 Slacs as equivalent to T20 universities, T20 equivalent to T40 and so on. Just a rough measure, but more or less reflects prestige and selectivity.

Maybe not 31. Maybe 50 LACs drop off more quickly and more steeply than National Us.

It’s fun to make up stuff. I’ll go next. National U quality really drops off after 67.
