I'm new to DC and am looking at a DC map, trying to figure out in which neighborhood Murch Elementary is located. I just can't figure it out. Anyone? tia

OP: LOL! I know how to find it on a map -- I just don't know what I'm looking at when I look at the map. I can see where it's located, but I can't figure out what neighborhood that is.

Upper Caucasia?

Essentially, it's like VanNess, but bordering on Chevy Chase, DC. A little known area named Garfield.

Most of that neighborhood is called Wakefield, but people may refer to that as Van Ness (from the Metro station) and parts of it may be considered Chevy Chase.

The real estate name for the neighborhood is North Cleveland Park.

Yes. The school itself is in North Cleveland Park (Nebraska Ave. is the dividing line between NCP and Chevy Chase), but it draws NCP, Forest Hills, and CC. Download the map on this page for more.

No, the school itself is in Wakefield. North Cleveland Park is to the south. Albemarle is the dividing line. If you buy a home across the street from Murch, your property tax records will say Wakefield.

Wakefield is a neighborhood in the Northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., bounded by Albemarle Street NW to the south, Nebraska Avenue NW to the west, and Connecticut Avenue to the east. It is served by the Van Ness-UDC and Tenleytown-AU station on the Washington Metro's Red Line (Washington Metro). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wakefield,_Washington,_D.C.

North Cleveland Park is bounded by Albemarle Street NW to the north, Tilden and Upton Streets NW to the south, Wisconsin and Nebraska Avenues NW to the west, and Connecticut Avenue to the east. It is served by the Van Ness-UDC station on the Washington Metro's Red Line (Washington Metro), and is therefore — like the adjacent Forest Hills neighborhood — frequently (but mistakenly)[citation needed] referred to as Van Ness.

I stand corrected. That said, I've lived a few blocks from Murch for almost seven years, and this is the first time I've heard of a neighborhood called Wakefield. I've never heard anyone refer to the neighborhood as Van Ness, either. And when you look on Google maps, the area falls under North Cleveland Park (http://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&q=north+cleveland+park+washington+dc&fb=1&gl=us&ei=9x2PS8WoHJqgzAT954X4Dg&ved=0CBQQpQY&hl=en&view=map&geocode=FfVAUgIdbPhn-w&split=0&iwloc=A&sa=X). So, I'm not denying that this neighborhood exists and am glad to know its proper name, but I'd vouch that for OP's purposes, knowing that Murch is in Wakefield isn't very helpful.

If you see the DCPS boundary map you'll see that Murch's boundaries extend all the way to the Maryland border on the West side of Connecticut Avenue.

It's all rather confusing. Kids on the west side of 41st go to Janney while those on the east side go to Murch. The streets between Reno/41st and Connecticut Ave (Livingston, Morrison, Legation, Military, Jennifer, etc. ) in Chevy Chase all feed into Murch.

If you are looking to buy / rent make sure you double check the address with the DCPS map.

If you want Murch, you don't want to go a few blocks 1 way and end up at Hearst.

I have lived in DC proper since 1970 and Ward 3 since 1977 and this is the first time I have ever heard of the term "Wakefield" to describe that area.

Yes, well, real estate agents like to call everything "North Cleveland Park" for a reason. that area is not -quite- Chevy Chase, so into the milieu it goes when you're marketing a property!

Along with Tenleytown, Van Ness and part of Forest Hills.

It's the North Potomac of DC Or North Bethesda, never ever say "South Rockville."
