Read Across America -Dr. Seuss

Anonymous
Next week its read across America.... AKA Dr.Seuss Birthday
How do you feel about Dr. Seuss ?

LCPS will not be reading books about him because of his racist past..
Do you think he should be banned from All schools??

I think we should learn to read with a double lens - take the good, critique the problematic - from any author. I think we should teach our kids to do the same. To do any less is to show a form of temporal snobbery that I really despise.

Not a fan of Dr. Seuss. And I agree with not having "Dr. Seuss" celebrations. But I don't agree with banning. His early readers are great for young children learning to read.

The official Read Across America event no longer recognizes or promotes Dr. Seuss. Some of his books are fine, others are racist. His political cartoons are absolutely disgusting. I do not think we should celebrate him but don't think we should cancel every single text. There is so much information online about this. Just do a quick google to see some of the images.

I never liked Dr. Seuss - even as a kid - so I am ok with canceling it

I have always hated Dr. Seuss.

This is a good point. I think about things like this every time a Michael Jackson song comes on the radio. I love his music but abhor what I know about his personal life. It is tough.

Some radio stations banned Michael Jackson and are no longer playing his music

Didn’t he grow as a person? I mean the Sneeches is all about racism. I am surprised that he’s considered problematic, it I haven’t seen the cartoons.

Let's have each year celebrate a different author.

Making words to rhyme is lame anyhow.

Dr Seuss is outdated and nonsense gibberish even if you personally don’t care about the racism. There’s better stuff to be reading than 85 year old Lorax books .

There are a lot of racist caricatures of Black people and Asians. War propaganda stuff too. Sure you can say he was of his time but that doesn’t mean kids today need to see it.

I haven’t read as many of his long books. That is sad to hear. I still think Green eggs and ham is an invaluable classroom resource. It only has 50 words, and most of them are monosyllabic. So many readers are thrilled to finally read a “real” book. I couldn’t lose GG&H, but I will certainly see if other titles need to be removed.

I think that Dr. Suess should not be celebrated as the father of children's literature like he once was, but I also think that his classics have their place. That being said, there are SO many amazing books to celebrate. Read Like A Rockstar has great suggestions for alternatives to Dr Suess based on lesson plan. (repetition, rhyming, numbers, etc)

No, do not ban Dr. Seuss or any book.

My kids and I are watching the original muppets from 1976-1980 something. EVERYTHING is wrong with it so we talk about it after. I find it a great way to talk about domestic violence. Making fun of accents. That dressing as an "Indian" is disrespectful and that goes for quite a few things. Violence, drinking and smoking are all unacceptable and the 1970s were terrible.

We've only watched 3 episodes but it's led to some great conversations we probably wouldn't have had otherwise.

That said, To think that I saw it on Mulberry Street is one of my fave Dr. S books and it's...problematic.
