I just started reading this forum for my 7th grade DS, so looking for HS in fall 2022. I rarely see The Heights come up, so wanted to ask. What’s its reputation? What kind of student is best fit? Going to be difficult to figure out since we probably can’t do open houses this spring or shadow days next fall, so thanks! |
Very Catholic. Very Catholic. |
Oh man. The lack of replies means something but I don’t know what! |
Very catholic, not great placement; make sure to hold your kid back, or else they will be way younger than their classmates. |
They'll have open houses in the fall. Also, they have plenty of information on their website. After the current admissions season is over, the Admissions team would be happy to speak with you, as well. Information from the school is going to be much more useful than what you get from the folks on this forum. For example, the comment about boys being held back doesn't ring true to me (a Heights parent). |
We're Catholic but I did not like how very conservative the school was. But the families I know with sons there are very satisfied (one family is liberal Catholic, another family is right wing Catholic, lot of Trump followers). |
I know a few families with kids there. Families are not any different from the other K-8 Catholic families. One thing I can tell you is that the two who moved prior to 9th grade have decided to stay there as opposed to transferring out for HS. |
Heights doesn’t do redshirting. They are actually more likely to let a 6th grader take Calculus. |
We don’t have boys, but we had girls at Oakcrest so we knew lots of families at the Heights. They were typically hard working, bright, family oriented, and polite. We aren’t Opus Dei. We are Catholic. Oakcrest was a great experience in our family so we have a great deal of affection for both schools. The comment about placement above is ludicrous. My daughter had a few friends in a recent class with an MIT acceptance, military academy acceptances, Harvard (more than one kid), UVA, WM, UMD (the campus everyone wants), and other sought after schools. Their travel options are enviable. They don’t seem to worship technology. And neither Oakcrest nor the Heights does anything beyond a junior/senior prom to promote spending social time with the opposite sex. Beyond the proms, it is all up to individual families and some classes are better at that than others. |
When the 6th grader is 14... ![]() |
(this was sarcasm, by the way) |
That’s matre Dei ![]() Actually in my sons class a true 6th grader was taking calculus. |
Heights = Opus dei = incredibly conservative patriarchal. Not a chance in hell I would send my boy there, but I am a bleeding heart liberal. If your are a right wing conservative, go for it. |
I’m actually liberal snd I did it. It’s not like they are going to turn your kid into a conservative. But if your uncomfortable being “in the minority” I can see not doing it. |
