Even though it ranked 4th out of 5 among students and 3rd out of 5 among parents/community members. Why do they even do surveys?

The committee rejected all of the decent place based names very early on because the nearby areas aren’t zoned for the school. Courthouse, Clarendon, Lyon Village, Vietch, Wilson were all in the running and dropped in favor of Summa, Polaris (?), and Gateway (which is being turned into a dog park btw, you are naming the school after a dog park that is over a mile away).

What was wrong with "Grace Hopper"?

Committee vetoed naming it after a person. I liked Grace hopper too.

So you’re stuck with either a location name (and they rejected all of the obvious place names because the nearby places aren’t zoned for the school, thus “gateway”) or an aspiration/quality (“summa”, “innovation”, “Polaris”). I’m glad at least they didn’t go with international. I think Courthouse or Clarendon would have been good since apparently you can’t do Lyon Village since Lyon was a racist jerk. Or why not Rosslyn elementary school? Maybe because it’s not near Rosslyn? Who knows. I guess they did their best.

+1 Regardless of zoning it is IN Clarendon. Why make it complicated?

It’s closer to Courthouse.

I think it's good to move away from naming schools after people.

Too many woman named schools after Hamm IDK

The committee probably wanted the cachet of a science adjacent name.

Innovation is harmless. And it’s better than some of the things they are considering for Lee Highway.

Let it go.

Agree. Its just disappointing.

I thought almost all of the proposed names were... not great.
But I understand not wanting to use names of people. Everyone with something named for them was once a respected person... who knows what people will find objectionable in another 100-200 years.

I'm surprised Loving Elem wasn't an option. They're trying to rename everything after them despite the fact that the family has no interest in it.
