| I know that people in DCPS have tested positive and then classes have shut down at certain campuses, but has there been *spread* in schools--i.e. one person in a class tests positive and then spreads it to others in the class. |
| OH JEEZ. Here we go |
| Why the negative reaction? This is not an inflammatory post. It's just seeking info. I would feel very reassured to know that contract tracing reveals that there's little/no spread in school (with the CARES classes that have been open in the fall). Unfortunately, community spread is a present, so one factor in determining whether I would take an in-person spot is whether community spread is happening *in* schools. |
| There's not really much of a way to know. We aren't testing enough inside or outside of schools. So if a couple of kids in a school get covid, did they get it from each other? Each get it from someone else in the school? Get it because they spend time together outside of school? Get it from totally independent sources? There is literally no way to accurately determine this. |
| Its a virus. People will catch it. Big deal. |
But we can be pretty well assured. This is the whole reason why contact tracing exists. |
| I am not aware of any evidence of spread *in* schools. I think prior to the Xmas break there actually hadn't been any instances of two people in the same classroom who had come into contact both getting COVID at all. I know there were a few places where multiple teachers in a school (but not the same classroom) got COVID within a 14 day period and I have no idea if any of those incidents have ever been traced to/heavily suggested school-based exposure. |
As someone recovering from Covid, it is a big deal. |
Ok but so? My school 2 people got it but it was outside of school. I can't trust the adults at my school with my life. Nor do I know who lives in a high Covid zone as people live outside of DC. It's never been about the school for me but I work with other adults in my classroom...are THEY following safety protocols outside of school.... |
|
DCPS does have protocols for someone testing positive.

Oops that's not what you asked. |
|
Way back in March 2020, before social distancing and before they shut down the schools at all, a teacher at my kid's school got it and a kid in the class also got it. No way to know if one passed it to the other, but it would be quite a coincidence if they got it independently given what the numbers were like back then.
Not sure how relevant this data is, though, given that there were no precautions being taken at that point. |
As someone who lost 2 family members to Covid, it is a big deal.. |
I mean, this is literally the info that OP asked for. Do you really not see why it's relevant if COVID infected people were in the school but they DIDN'T pass it on? That's evidence that the precautions work. |
I don't really think we know what the numbers were back then, given the very limited testing. It seems possible they gave it to each other (though we have precautions that would make transmission harder now) or got it from a third person who was asymptomatic, but they also could have gotten it independently. |
