I have a 6 year old and 4 year old boys and they want to play family games at the dinner table while we eat. We play I spy and ABC game but 6 year old is bored and 4 year old loves it.
Any other ideas would be great! |
Did you ever see John Q? The family plays that game where they say a word fast and others have to guess what it is. We play that in the car and my kid loves it. |
You could also do a collaborative storytelling - ie each person says one line and continues the story.
Or 20 questions. |
Word association - one person says a word, then the next says the first word that comes to their mind, and so on.
The telephone game Get (or make) a jar of questions that everyone has to answer Would you rather |
Get random cards from your wallet that are distinct colors- between 5-7. Spread them out and have the kids close their eyes. Take away one and have them use their memory and guess which one you took away. |
It’s not a game but we play high/low/ thankful at dinner. We take it in turns and each person had to say what their high was for the day, has to be specific to the day, then their low for the day. Then something they are thankful for. You can’t just say something generic like friends and family. Has to be day specific. Today my thankful was that we have a spare room for DD to do homeschool because I don’t have to deal with her stuff on my dining room table. My kids thankful was that I let her do crafts and make a mess......... |
Above PP again. You have to have a high and thankful. You do not have to have a low. |
We do this too. My 4 year old reminds me if I forget. |
Famous person guessing game. Yes/no questions only. |
We play a light-gearted version of trivia - Johnny, can you name 5 types of cereals? Sarah, name 8 things that have wheels....- those type of questions. I taylor them to make them age appropriate and sometimes will give an extra challenge by setting a timer.
We have so much fun with it that it flows into dessert time. |
We play “what’s missing?” Everyone closes their eyes except one person who quietly removes a salt shaker or napkin or whatever. The rest have to guess what is missing. You think you’ve memorized what’s on the table, but it can be pretty hard! |
Table Topics (kid version) |
We play a version of 20 questions /guessing game, making up our own categories like "character in a book we've read" or "people we know at school."
For games you can buy, we like: Hedbanz Guess in 10 (similar to 20 questions) Top Trumpz |
We play games after dinner, not at the table, or we’d lose pieces or not eat. Our boys are 5 and 4 and we like
