Can anyone tell me if the in-boundary choice of Deal for sixteenth street heights is one of those about to be phased out? I don't remember seeing it as in-boundary during the lottery last year and was surprised when I saw it today. My kid is pre-k 4, but it might change our future plans if we were zoned for Deal.
Thanks! |

I think it's up for rezoning with the next boundary review, which I think is coming up in the next year or two. It's possible that it will be delayed because politicians *hate* the blowback.
Someone with more precise understanding of dates and deadlines can probably figure out which school year specifically would be the likely cut off. I wouldn't count on more than another 1-2 years. There was a MacFarland thread earlier that you may want to look into. PK gives you a fair amount of time to figure things out. |
Thanks. It does, for sure. My neighbor was telling me that its a grandfather thing that will end soon, but I have no idea how it works and can't seem to find the information on the internet. |
| I thought Crestwood and 16th St Heights were zoned out in the last zoning review. Only Mt Pleasant and Shepherd Park on the east side of the Park are still zoned to Deal. What is the elementary school you are in boundary for? There was some grandfathering after the last review but I think it would be way beyond allowing a current PK4 kid into the prior schools |
I thought so too. We're IB for west. I was just surprised when I saw that deal was listed IB on my school dc. It could be a mistake. |

We live in a grandfathered area; it was an add in after the boundary review process was completed. It was called a "tweak."
I would absolutely not count on this in the future. https://dme.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/dme/publication/attachments/Boundary%20Tweaks%20FAQ%20%282%29.pdf |

Looks like the phase in was extended at some point:

It was extended a month after Muriel Bowser took office. |
so it will end in 2022? |
I don't think anyone knows for sure but it was a special deal (no pun intended) in the first place so it's not hard to imagine it will. But maybe it won't. |
Looks like it. The prior boundary changes allowed kids with siblings at Deal to pull in their siblings after the boundary changes so possibly some families could still access Deal if they had older kids (eg if you enrolled a 6th grader in SY22 then two years later your younger child might still be able to get into Deal). But that would not help you if you didn't have older kids |
| So where do these particular rich kids go to middle school now? Or where will they? Private? |
Not enough private spaces to absorb more than a very small fraction. They'll have to go elsewhere in DC (Basis?) or many will move to MCPS. |
| The end of this is 2022, so while I'm a little fuzzy about whether current fourth-graders are "in" on the grandfathering, your pre-K child is not covered. |
The way I read it, that it goes through SY22, which would include current 4th graders. |
