Safety of futsal on tennis courts

Anonymous
Does anyone else have safety concerns about this - the chain link fencing that is used for tennis is not connected to the bottom of the court, and on two occasions, I have seen a player get bumped or slide into the fence and have his or her leg caught under the fence. Neither kid that I saw got hurt in any serious way, but it is possible. On both occasions, a parent spectator had to pull the fence away to help the kids get free.

Clearly dangerous, we should ban tennis to because you never know what can happen.

OP here. I play tennis, and it is no problem for tennis because there is zero contact. I have both a girl and boy that play futsal (different ages), and have seen this happen to kids on one of their teams, as well as ASA's Pro Team at a game we went to at Ramsay. I don't have any space utilization concerns about the courts for tennis v. soccer, because I play at Arlington YMCA courts in the winter, rather than outside. But, even in non-COVID times, the Ramsay court is a futsal court, and has a chain link fence. It seems to me that the city should attach the fence to the court or take another similar precaution.

We used to play a game in high school that was pick-up soccer on a pavement basketball court with a chain linked fence around both sides of the court. Winner stayed on. Sometimes you got checked into the chain link fence and we all survived. It taught you how to play in an intense environment and we often had non-soccer guys play as well. Great times. Futsal on tennis courts are no problem

OP, are you the same OP of the tennis thread that complains about futsal being played on your tennis courts?

No. But I know who is, because he posted the same complaint on nextdoor using his own name.

why don't you contact the city of Alexandria's department of recreation and facilities make a suggestion. I don't think anyone on DCUM has any ability to do anything about it.

I'm sure they will get back to you shortly.

Thanks, I was seeking feedback on whether my concern was reasonable before doing that. Looks like most people thought it was not. I guess it still can't hurt to mention it to the rec department, and let them do what they think best from there.

geez give the poster a break. wish we had more people like them bugging the facilities people about things that need to be fixed

It's fine. Just make sure everyone has had a tetanus shot!

I would open up a lawsuit against the tennis players that did not point this safety issue out when the courts were developed and allowed the futsal kids get hurt. Then use the money to paint lines for a futsal court for use in the upcoming winters.

1. You’re clearly the OP defending yourself
2. They’re not bugging the facilities people, this is DCUM
3. Nothing is broken

+ 1. Why is the futsal area so close to the fence in first place. All the futsal games I watched where pretty far from the fence.

No. My 12-year old and 15-year old sons are playing futsal on tennis courts and no fear from me. The sh*t I see these 2 boys do on their own together and with friends---playing futsal on tennis courts is the least of my concerns. I only just learned about the ramps and why both of our saucer sleds have huge holes in the bottom of them after last week. I came down to the 12-year old on a school break jumping from piece of furniture to piece of furniture because they weren't allowed to touch the ground.

I mean you can wrap them in bubble wrap if you want. Most studies indicate that kids that were over-parented and did not have free play jumping over rocks and taking risks get more injured as adults because they never achieved the body awareness in youth. There is a pretty fascinating German study on this. They basically started having kids over there play in junk yards and with matches...no joke.

I digress.
