| I hate cold and don’t have the right gear. 5 yo is playing Minecraft with dad. I know kid would love it but I keep asking and he says he doesn’t want to right now. I know he’ll love it and all his friends are outside but I’m kind of over nagging him to come outside. Anyone else not going outside? |
| TBH, no. This is the first snow we’ve had in two years and we’re spending as much time out there as possible. |
| I force my kids to go outside |
| Don't waste the chance for fresh air and exercise. That's what is best for your child, and you know it. Even 20-30 minutes. Just do it. |
| We insist on outdoor play every day, even if it's just a twenty minute walk with the dogs, even if it's below 20 degrees. |
| My kids would always say no. It's inertia. You have to muster them and make it happen. |
|
I think of it like dragging them on vacation. It’s often miserable at first but then it gets fun and we make good memories.
It’s hard to pull a kid away from Minecraft though. Can you turn it off and kind of see what happens? This is a very rare opportunity. |
Very rare? Ok. We had snow in the 2018-2019 season. It’s not like this is snow in LA or something. |
once every two years is very rare especially in the life of a small child. But if you take issue with the term “very rare,” how about “OP your kid might not get this opportunity again until he is 7.” |
Ok fine. At least that’s more accurate. |
|
General principle: You have to try it, you don't have to like it.
Drag them outside. Tell them it doesn't have to be very long. They will probably have fun and want to stay out for a long time. But if after 10 minutes or so they want to go back in, let them. |
NP. Yeah it’s rare if it happens once or twice in a winter season of 3-4 months. So 2/90 days, ie around 2%. That’s rare. |
Or you can quantify it in terms of entire seasons, which would mean it happens 50% of the time. See how you can manipulate numbers to say what you want? |
| You don’t need the “ right gear” assuming you do have basic winter clothing. Wear leggings under pants. Layer a couple of shirts under a coat.... you will be fine if you are sensible. |
|
Omg what do you mean you don’t have the right gear? If you’re dressed properly you won’t be cold. Just bundle up, double pants, double socks, thick sweater, jacket. Hoodie if you don’t have a hat.
People in way colder climates take their kids out every day. I come from such a location overseas and I have never heard anyone complain as much as here that they’re cold. Just dress after the weather. |
