My kids’ preschool (over a decade ago) had all doors locked during the day, with a video camera at the main entry door- with security needing to visualize and speak to you before the door was remotely unlocked. Apartment complexes have had such technology for decades.

But most public schools have, basically, no security at all. Anyone with a gun can pretty much waltz in and have free reign. Why?

It certainly wouldn’t prevent everything, but why does nothing seem to be done at all? These are all easy things.

This is not true where I live. All schools are locked and you have to show ID to a camera outside before being let in. And then you go through a metal detector, at least in the middle and high schools. God, just typing that out is so depressing.

Most schools don’t have metal detectors but they do have everything else listed. None of these things would have helped in this case since they went through the windows. The only thing I think would keep someone off the premises is a high gate and multiple security personnel. Prison like conditions

And then even if you do that what happens if they can shoot through onto the playground when the kids are at recess. What about bus loading/unloading. Field trips.

I was a Sunday school teacher for 30-plus years, until recently, in a small liberal church in Northern California that rose out of the civil rights movement. I never tried to comfort them with nice Christian bumper sayings or platitudes, especially after school shootings like the one at the back-to-school Mass at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis. “Hey, kids. Yay! God’s got a plan! Phew.” Still, we did believe that death was a pretty major change of address and that God caught the children as they left this life.

But when we read in the Hebrew Bible that weeping may last the night and that joy comes in the morning, I explained that this does not mean literally at dawn, like a new bike from Walmart. We’re talking long dark nights of the soul. And the psalmist didn’t mean joy joy, like Pop Rocks and the Village People. He meant relief and peace, eventually.

There should be one inviolable rule: Children are not shot or starved to death.

That website has a very narrow definition of “mass shooter” (has to be in a public place, has to be random victims, etc). And in those circumstances, it’s 54% white. So I think that’s why, when we hear about a random shooting at a school, we do immediately think “white guy” and often we’re correct.

But yes, the other pp is correct that if you are just talking about people who kill more than 1 person, so you capture gang violence and domestics, the percentage of whites goes down.

Stop moving the goal posts. When people talk about mass shooter they mean that definition (public, random victims). They aren't talking about gang violence. It's a different category and you know it.

4 people killed/injured excluding the shooter seems to be the standard used by most media organizations.

I want ALL gun crimes including illegal possession prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law regardless of whether the criminal belongs to a protected class. No exceptions.

(DP). I agree. More than half of these school shooters are white and they are overwhelmingly male. I think that’s worth exploring. Is it something in white culture? Is there something in non-white cultures that discourages school shooters?

The fact that Black / non-white males are more often the perpetrators of gang violence / domestic violence (if true) seems irrelevant here. But, that’s certainly a conversation that society should be having too, just not here.

How I told my Sunday School Students About Death

I was a Sunday school teacher for 30-plus years, until recently, in a small liberal church in Northern California that rose out of the civil rights movement. I learned early on that when you have a lot of poor kids as students, you get to know tragedy up close — addicted or dead parents, shootings, the injuries and mortification of racism and poverty. So we talked more about tragedy than you might expect.

We’re talking long dark nights of the soul. And the psalmist didn’t mean joy joy, like Pop Rocks and the Village People. He meant relief and peace, eventually.

There should be one inviolable rule: Children are not shot or starved to death.

He claims to be a Sunday school teacher but if he truly were reading The Hebrew Bible, he would have seen plenty of support for killing babies and children.
