orthodontics as an adult

I'm thinking about getting braces and have some financing questions. Has anyone been able to use dental insurance AND a dental discount plan to help pay treatment costs? I've also heard of people getting a lower price if they say they don't have insurance and then submitting the reimbursements themselves. Thoughts?

Holy crap. It's cosmetic. Would you really ask for a discount? What's next, free plastic surgery?

Where are you from? Are you from somewhere that things America hands things out? Because that is NOT how it works, I have news for you. No matter what your "friends" tell you.

Do you have parents? Did they teach you the fundamentals between right and wrong? Between people who can't do for themselves because of legitimate limitations - and able bodied people?

Do you have a conscience? Because now I think I have heard everything. Some of us work for what we have, no matter how difficult.

Handouts are NEVER a good thing.

Wow. Just wow.

Not all orthodontics are cosmetic. It can move not only teeth but also jaw positions, which can affect how you breathe, chew, how often you get upper respiratory illness...

I have no idea what kind of work you're looking to get done, but I recently paid to start Invisalign. Insurance does not cover any part of the procedure. There's a company called Care Credit? where you can set up zero or low interest payment plans. My doctor's office offered 5% off the total costs if I paid for everything in full upfront.

Insurance does help cover cost of braces for children under 18 (even if it is for purely cosmetic reasons).
Wow. Just wow.

I didn't have insurance. I needed braces for non cosmetic reasons. I paid out of pocket like everyone else. Who is this special person?

OP--I had Invisalign a few years back and received a small discount on the total price by prepaying 100%. The cost was about $5,000. A big chunk of money (at least for me), but it was worth every penny. Just make sure you go to a very good orthodontist if you're willing to pay for braces. My dental insurance didn't cover anything.

For the crazy people: a dental discount plan is a legitimate alternative to insurance. Google it to educate yourself before flaming. There is a cost associated with it so it's not free. Basically, if the provider participates in the plan you get a discount by paying the fees all up front instead of over time. I do have insurance too but it's capped at $2000. I need braces for non-cosmetic reasons and would struggle to come up with the additional $5000-$7000 not covered. My question was will a provider accept insurance AND participation in a discount plan. I will just contact the provider instead of further enraging the PPs.

This special person is someone who is doing the research. Maybe if you had done it you could have paid less too.

WHO do you think pays for it in the end? The honest people? Do you have parents? Or is this handout city? Why is it okay to live off the system? You have no goals in life?

where I work, you have to use one or the other insurance, whichever is your priomary...they'll help you file with the other insurance plan, but you pay based on the first plan

Sometimes if you pay up front, the orthodontist will give you a break. Don't make this choice based solely on price, though. Reputation really matters because not all orthodontists are equally good.

Also, train tracks cost less than invisaline, and it really isn't that bad. And, sometimes, depending on what the orthodontist needs to do, the invisaline don't even look that good, anyway.

OP here - thank you to the people who had helpful comments.

Good luck, OP. I spent 4 years in train tracks. You get past it pretty quickly. Was totally worth it.

For the folks who had Invisalign, please recommend the orthodontis.
