I really don't understand the flaming here. I had orthodontics as an adult to resolve chronic jaw pain, severely limited range of motion (no effective chewing, minimal opening), progressing osteoarthritic changes to my jaw joints, and headaches so bad the condition was really messing up my life. Insurance didn't cover it for me, but I think coverage should be legitimate because dental alignment can be such a relevant factor wrt. other health problems. Jaw surgery, which would just have been a more invasive (and expensive) treatment to accomplish the same ends for me, would have been covered.
Kudos to OP if she finds a way to get this health problem addressed that doesn't break the bank. |
OP said nothing about it being a health problem. |
I suppose, but the flamers automatically assumed it was merely cosmetic, which is really not a fair assumption either. For the record, I personally think some really goofy cosmetic problems can chip away at quality of life enough to be legitimate concerns. Things like pronounced bucktoothiness or dramatically receding chin issues, maybe, are not too far behind cleft lip/palates. These things should have been dealt with in childhood and might have been covered by insurance then, of course, but this may not have happened for one reason or another. We'd support correcting deformities, but I'm not sure where to draw the line on the unsightly continuum. |

Even if the procedure is purely cosmetic, there is nothing wrong with trying to get a deal. My husband is a serial bargain hunter and negotiates everything, even if department stores. The first time he did it in my presence I was so embarrassed I thought I would die, that is, until the sales person (Nordstroms) actually gave him a discount.
OP, unlikely that dental insurance will provide coverage, but do ask whichever provider you choose if they offer any discounts or payment plans. |
In her second post she did - "non-cosmetic reasons." Either way, it sounds like she has a legitimate dental plan that will help her with the cost that is contributing to, so no need for anyone to be upset at this point. |

WThtThe issue at hand is that the US is NOT a third world country wherwe bartering is the norm. When in rome, do as the romans. We know what happens otherwise. Is that what you want? Are yopu sop self insulated you think there are no sociology economic repercussions to handouts? How very niave.
