IVF at 39

Anonymous
I am 39 and husband is 45.
I see the chances to conceive on first try are 26% and 54% with third try.
Do you think those are real numbers? Is 54% high chance?

Thanks for any input.

Who knows. Have you tried naturally first? Any other kids or pregnancies? For some it will be easy, others not. It’s not totally ancient.

We did, but nothing yet.
I had laparoscopic surgery last year, they checked my tubes, all fine, small endometriosis. I am ovulating as I am tacking it.
DH’s semen analysis is perfect.

Wondering what can be wrong with us.

No previous pregnancies ever.

How long have you tried on your own?

I was also unexplained but as I was in my 40s it might've been just hard egg shells which seems to be a thing. I don't think 39 in itself is too old, especially since you don't have ian ssue like DOR. 54% chance by the third try seems a reasonable stat. FWIW I got 3 PGS normal embryos from my first round at 41 and 2 more in my next cycle at 42. We used ICSI in both cycles which I suspect helped things along. Good luck!

This seems like a Hail Mary.

Sometimes they work... Mostly not though..,

The numbers are real. You just never know whether you’re going to be in the 54 percent or the 46 percent.

About 6 months. Then my mom got cancer and I had no libido because of stress.

Thank you, we are going next month.
Is IUI possible or I will need IVF right away?

You have to ask the RE. How can someone answer this over the internet?

Obviously there is no replacement for the opinion of an RE, however, there's no need in shaming someone for asking for some perspective before she meets with an RE. Seems like the whole purpose of this forum.

I tried naturally for 6-7 months, got a diagnosis of unexplained infertility, and then did 2 rounds of IUI at 39 but have since moved on to IVF. IUI does work for some women even at 39+; just not for me. My RE seemed to lean toward trying IUI first with me. He likely would not have recommended going beyond 3 rounds though.

Don’t waste time with iui. Unfortunately I know from experience. I did have hard egg shells like pp said. Icsi did the trick. I’m sorry about your mom. Good luck.

Of course iui is possible, but IMO it’s mainly a step to get you so emotionally drained that you will try anything: IVF. Fwiw, I did natural cycle IVF and it worked on the first try.

New poster here - do the odds go up if someone is in this scenario but has been pregnant before, ie secondary infertility? Been trying for one year, but had one miscarriage in that window. I also have a son, so have been pregnant two times before. In the middle of testing but so far everything coming back "normal".
