i gained 57lbs and i attempted to watch my diet. i'm just wondering how much i would have gained had i given in every time i was hungry. i just hope i can get the remaining 20 off. i seem to have become stuck.

Were you counting calories when you were attempting to watch your diet? It's a real education once you take the time to measure your food (by weight, by one cup serving size, etc.) and really learn how much you're eating. I say this as someone who recently started working with a trainer and very diligently keeping track of my calorie intake. I was really shocked at what my calorie intake was - I can't believe I hadn't gained a ton more weight, considering how much I was (very surprisingly) taking in.

Good luck to you - keep up your efforts - you can get there!

While I agree that calorie counting is a great way to educate yourself and realize how much you actually eat, vs how much you think you are consuming, I am totally against it FOR ME. The more I count calories, the more I think about how much I'm allowed, the more I think how much I have left, the more I think about food, the more I think about food, the more I want to eat, the more I want to eat, the more I end up breaking the diet. It doesn't work for me.

That being said, yes, I try to control myself now, but I still have about 35 lbs that I never managed to lose.

I made a pact with myself to eat a cup of vegetables (frozen, salad, raw carrot sticks, etc., whatever i could find) before eating a meal or a snack, and it really helped me lose weight without counting calories.

THIS sounds like a great idea. I am like OP in that the more I count calories the more food-obsessed I become. I once had a bad cold for two weeks lost my sense of smell/taste. It was the one time in my life when I ate less, because my stomach was my only cue of when I wanted food or was full. It was great. I wish I could recreate that phenomena without the stuffy nose.

I'm the PP who said I become obsessed with food if I count calories, but I am not the OP. I can see why you'd think that, though.

were you pregnant?

I lose about 5 pounds every fall because of allergies. There are about three weeks when my sinuses are so stuffy that I'm nauseous. Miserable but I get ahead of the curve going into the holiday season.

I just can't fathom gaining 57 lbs without being pregnant. I mean at 5lbs by waistband is tight and I know to reign it in. Unless it was a medical problem I just can't fathom continuing to go out and buy bigger and bigger clothes or my family members not making fun of me when I went home for the Holidays. That is alot of frickin' weight...sorry i don't mean to be insensitive but when I read the subject line..I thought maybe it was 15-20lbs.

OP here, yes I was pregnant. I thought I posted this in General parenting...sorry! So about 35lbs came off with the baby (I was also really swollen), but I really did try to watch what i ate. of course i sometimes watched myself overeat, but i felt like i was ALWAYS hungry.

LEAST HELPFUL RESPONSE EVER. Way to kick someone when they're down. Why would you bother posting this? Sorry I don't mean to be insensitive but I hate posters like this.

I gained more than that when pregnant. Turned out I had a thyroid problem. It's more common than you think. Even with thyroid meds it's hard to lose weight, but hoping weightwatchers program will help.

THAT WAS THE POINT of my unhelpful post.....I was insinuating there had to be something medical going on---esp if she wasn't gorging like she says she wasn't. Without being pregnant--that is a sh*tload of weight to gain. KUDOS to her for taking the majority of it off...I might suggest getting bloodwork done and checking for underlying problem.

I gained more than sixty pounds in a month when my thyroid just quit working. I was chubby to begin with and being obese wasn't in my life plan. My thyroid has been corrected but the weight didn't come off, even when I was running ten miles every other day. While I do have a medical reason, your remarks are still unkind. You must be one of those people that check my grocery cart to see how much junk food I am purchasing and feel the need to comment about what is in my shopping cart. Maybe you were the woman at Costco who couldn't get over the fact that there was ZERO junk food in my cart.

OP, I love, love, love Clean Eating Magazine. Each issue has close to 100 recipes in it and a meal plan is included if you wish to follow it. I haven't used the meal plan but do cook the meals and have found that I get full faster and stay full longer. I also lost the cravings, except for when my period shows up, but that's a whole other monster. Like I said above, I didn't lose weight when I was running all the time, but getting rid of processed foods really made a huge difference. I take one day off a week and will either eat out or something that isn't all that great for me. I have lost 20lbs since the new year and I feel better and have more energy.

I gained 25 between November and this month...I can *just* barely still fit in my clothes (and can't some of my pants...ugh.) so that's been my impetus- I'm just not willing to buy up.

So on to the gym I go...unfortunately, I still can't get the chocolate binges under control. But at least watching my calories otherwise and gym helps some.

I do think eating vegetables and low calorie fruit and drinking a lot of water is really key to any weight loss/staying full.

I also sometimes will brush my teeth or use mouthwash when I feel a nighttime chocolate craving coming on..it just doesn't taste good at that point!
