Is there a chance the kids won't go back in person next fall?

Anonymous
I have a friend who is a teacher and thinks they can't if the kids aren't vaccinated as well. Thoughts?

Of course there is a change. As of now, we still have to distance. Kids can’t be 5 days full time and distance.

I hope we are able to choose between full virtual and 5 day in person.

Yes because the goalposts keep moving. In reality, if teachers are vaccinated, and vulnerable adults are vaccinated, and kids with predicting conditions stay home, everyone else could go to school without any issues.

True but the virus is mutating and kids won’t be vaccinated by September.

It seems absolutely insane that they wouldn’t be back full time in person (at least for elementary school) since the risk of death/serious illness to children at this age is genuinely less than the flu and most adults will be vaccinated at this point. However, since it seems that post-COVID logic has completely gone out the window I think there’s a good chance they’ll be in hybrid at best so we’re applying to privates to be safe.

No evidence that the new mutation is more deadly- just more contagious.

Definitely a good chance. As PP mentioned, goalposts keep moving and no one is willing to accept even the slightest risks, even if teachers and older adults (and possibly/probably others!) are vaccinated. Do I think we will be full DL, no. But I could see a year + of hybrid if no one is willing to relax on the distancing thing.

In MCPS, yes, because logic has gone out the window, and they seem more focused on deferring to anxiety and politics than facts and science. It’s particularly painful since we’re home to the NIH and the FDA.

I’m a progressive Democrat, FWIW, and completely disgusted by how far down the list kids are in this whole mess. It’s like schools exist solely to provide jobs for adults.

We are in MCPS, and I feel sad with all these.

Which is why kids should be returning. (1) kids have mild cases (2) vaccine for kids won’t be available for 1-2 more years!

So. Knowing that, and assuming adult population will be vaccinated by September, they should be brought back to class 5 days a week. With masks. No hybrid or 6’ distancing requirements.

It’s absurd to wait till kids are vaccinated before returning to in-person. No one is going to sit at home for the 1-2 years that will take.

I wonder Biden being president officially next week will change anything about dmv school in person opening? Like speed up...

OP here. This is how it's looking. If teachers are vaccinated and masks work, then why not return them to school? I'd even take half day school at thsi point. Kids and parents are being held hostage based on how people "feel" about returning, not science. Same people who feel uneasy with opening schools are fine with their grocery store workers working full shifts dealing with hundreds of people every day, not just 5-10 masked children who are staying in one place and have parents who would be happy to give them a saliva test every week to get them back in school if need be.

I agree to a point but young kids aren’t that good about staying masked or washing their hands. Kids have and will die from covid even though it’s a small percentage.

And then there are the anti-vaxxers...
