Is there a chance the kids won't go back in person next fall?

With no possibility of a refund.

We can't do anything about it, and when we speak up we are shamed for not caring about teachers or the community.

What is needed is a one dose vaccine built on the traditional platform.

I don’t take the shame. I think it’s a failure of democracy that in person education is only available to those who can afford it.

Are you really using Los Angeles as a model????????? Well, if Mayor Bowser had been comfortable with hitting nearly 200 deaths per day and 15000 new cases per day by January, yeah, she might have kept DCPS open since March. Shake. My. Head.

It's a failure of dumb, risk averse leaders.

+1. 2 kids in private. One hanging on to graduate from APS. Public school kids will be MASSIVELY behind when the dust settles.

Our private school has been full-time-in-person since September. But the restrictions and safety protocols put in place (plexiglass barriers between desks, New ventilations system) are not affordable in public schools.

Public school has been disastrous for a long time. This year has just highlighted it. This phenomenon applies to so many things right now: health care, day care, job security, etc.

Same for the large public school districts here. I wake up every day amazed that the government is OK with this. You can go to Disney World or get a tattoo. Literally you can do anything but go to public school. School shouldn't be a luxury good available only to the wealthy. What a sad state of affairs.

According to CDC as of Jan 13, 55 children ages 5-14 have died with covid.

You can't really tease out the high schoolers from the college age kids - the next CDC category of age jumps, from 15 to 24 years old.

The large majority of child and teen covid deaths involve underlying conditions.

Wow. How many kids die of the flu each year? I think it’s more. In the 60s? What about school shootings? Sadly I think that number is higher too. Once all the adults have access to the vaccine it’s time to fully reopen schools with a virtual option for the medical fragile kids and the emotionally fragile dmv parents.

Can you find some new talking points? With DL, things like school shootings are down. Get therapy for your fragile kids.

My kids aren’t fragile. They are thriving. Because we moved heavy and earth to put them in private school. I was hoping to put them back in MCPs in the fall but it is not looking good

And, how many adults contracted covid from kids and died because of that? Oh wait, we don't track that.

We know that kids can transmit covid, but are less likely than adults to do so. There's a lot of published research looking into that exact question, such a study from Iceland of 40k people that found that children under 15 were half as likely to transmit.

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/2020/12/we-now-know-how-much-children-spread-coronavirus/

We also know that in the US, disease rates in counties with in person school available for kids are similar to areas with online only school options, and the CDC has noted that covid 19 outbreaks aren't driven by in person classes.

Regardless this thread is asking about next fall, when likely the adults in the home WILL have had the opportunity to be vaccinated.

Why are we wasting vaccines on teachers next week? We should prioritize people with underlying conditions over them, unless they stop insisting on virtual learning.

I think at least most of the adult population needs to be vaccinated before schools resume in person
