Anonymous
We learned from a friend this morning that 4-6 men stole 3 cars at gun point last night (1/11) along Alton, near 47th, around midnight.

The police caught 2 of the suspects, after a red light camera spotted them and a chase ensued.

Thank goodness for high speed chases...wait...aren't those illegal. Do those MPD now get suspended?

Seriously though. Great job MPD.

Police say the wrecked Acura was taken around midnight from the 4700 block of Alton Place Northwest, just after a couple had taken their kids inside their home. They were returning to their vehicle for belongings when they were confronted by the armed carjackers. A Toyota Rav 4 was also stolen by the same crew nearby in the 4300 block of Alton Place around the same time, police said.

At this time, no injuries were reported. But police said a woman who's Audi was carjacked by the crew around 10 p.m. in the 1400 block of 30th Street Northwest was thrown to the ground.

Police said the crew shut down the owner's mobile devices that were left in the vehicle. Officers were still able to recover the brand new Audi Q5 by activating its onboard tracking system, police said.

Why are carjackings on the rise? Any Ideas?

Wasn't there one on Military road too? Two guys stood in the middle of the road with assault guns and stopped a car, force the guy out, then others came out of the woods jumped in and drove away.

And remember that these car jackings are different and distinct from the Ak-47 car jackings being talked about in Off Topic just down the road from these in Friendship Heights.

Kind of crazy. Two armed car jackings in two nights about 500 meters apart.

But they are property crimes. Not a priority.

In Petworth last night there was a carjacking where two young children were in the car. They were recovered a couple hours later. Terrifying.

Um, there were 2 kids in the back seat of one of them. So not a property crime but a kidnapping.

Crime is going down in the city. Just ask the Mayor. January 12 and only half a dozen or so car jackings...not bad...

So far we have restricted MPD riot control capacity...and then asked for them to conduct more riot control.

We have asked them not to pursue high speed chases...and then asked them to chase car jackers.

January 2021 seems to be setting up to be the payback for our rash 2020 decisions.

From the Metropolitan Police Department:

Armed Carjackings in the Second District (Crime Pattern). From January 11, 2021, approximately 10:06 P.M., and January 12, 2021, 12:04 A.M., three Armed Carjackings were committed in the Second District. The following offenses were reported:

10:06 P.M. - 1500 block of 30th Street, N.W. Stolen: White Audi Q 5
12:02 P.M. - 4700 block of Alton Place, N.W. Stolen: Navy Blue Acura MDX
12:04 P.M. - 4300 block of Alton Place, N.W. Stolen: Light Blue Toyota RAV 4

At this time, it is believed that all three carjackings were committed by the same suspects. In each offense, three suspects exited a black sedan or a gray or blue sedan and approached the victim's vehicle. One of the suspects pointed a black handgun at each victim and demanded his/her vehicle. The suspects then entered the victim's vehicle and fled. In each offense, the vehicle (gray or black sedan) that the suspects had exited from followed behind the carjacked vehicle.

The suspects were described as three black males, 5'8"-5'10" in height, thin build, wearing dark clothing and face masks. One of the suspects was reported to be wearing a white jacket.
Shortly after the third carjacking was committed, members of the Fifth District located the stolen Acura MDX and attempted to stop it. Members pursued the vehicle and it was stopped at Eastern Avenue and Municipal Place in Mount Rainier, Maryland. As a result, two suspects were apprehended, and the carjacked vehicle was recovered. As at least 2 suspects are still at large, the investigation is on-going. MPD members also recovered the Audi Q5 that was taken in the carjacking on 30th Street.

Anyone with information (or video) about these offenses is asked to call the MPD Command Information Center at 202-727-9099.

Police gave chase and caught them. When is pursuit allowed/not allowed? Curious about the distinction. Sure seems like a good idea for any carjacking, weapon involved, or innocent person still in the car. Will police get criticized/city sued for it?

If the "result" of MPD's actions fit our collective "quick litmus" test, then all is ok. If it fails, then we want heads.

Slow speed pursuit of a scooter where the passenger dies. Fire the police officer.

Pursue a car jacking and make a clean arrest. Officer is a hero.

Had the under aged car jacker died in the Acura traffic accident, we would be calling for the same officer's head this morning.
