The fact that Rhee's office is begging people to testify on her behalf speaks volumes. Maybe if they offered to pick me up and feed me lunch I might be able to mutter a few words about new facilities, which were already in the pipeline before Rhee arrived.

Tisk, tisk! "Collaboration is overated" after all...

Seriously? Reform, yes. Rhee herself? Not so much. I'm sick of hearing that we can't separate the two. Why not? Unless she has a govt relations/PR person in tow, as Catania begged her to get, the last thing we need is to draw more attention to the circus. She's made it clear that she doesn't need (or want?) cheerleaders. She gets herself into this council posturing. She should get herself out. And as quickly as possible so she can get back to work. Just pull a mea culpa and get it over with, Michelle.

Wow. What a nasty, self-satisfied bunch of posters on this thread. I think I'll go elsewhere for thoughtful debates...

I kind of want to sign up just because of the nasty posters on this thread.

I do think she is doing a good job. Do I agree with her methods? Maybe not. But she is making improvements for our kids. Who can argue with that?

You have got to be kidding me. We are fed up w/ the district. I have a kid who most likely has dyslexia (yes, he's been through all the testing) and his public school (east of the park) is abysmal. DCPS will not help get into a decent school at all. We get the lottery and an IEP. Period. No exceptions. And, the district will not longer place kids with serious special needs in schools that can help these kids (ie Lab.) Why? Because DCPS can do it ALL! I beg to differ.

Ok, problems in DCPS abound. But how about supporting someone who can make changes? If each Chancellor comes in and goes right out again because each and every problem isn't fixed immediately, what good is that going to do? Look at the trend lines ( good ) and support Rhee long enough to keep those trends going.

PP, it sounds like you need to get an education advocate and file a lawsuit. There are lots of families whose children attend private schools on DCPS's dime because DCPS isn't meeting their needs and isn't serious about trying to. Good luck to you and your son.

Sorry for rant. PP 22:00 here. I realize (with sleep and coffee) it came across overly negative. Just frustrated that debates seem more focused on Rhee herself than long-haul reform issues like budget, IMPACT, contract, oversight, etc. (I'm done with the union, too btw.) The appeal says support the chancellor first. That's what I meant about "not so much". If it just said show support for what's actually happening, then I'd be all for it.

I'm a frustrated supporter. I do trust her intent to help DC children and applaud her passion. I don't believe she's hired "cronies" as principals. The racist label is of course ridiculous. (I'm AA) The "only cares about ward 3" theories are totally unfounded. (And lest we forget, when she first started, people complained she was ignoring wards 1, 2 and 3. lol ) When I've spoken with her and seen her out of the limelight, I think "she's great! These things make sense."

Then she goes and runs her mouth "out of context" and the soap opera heats up all over again. Yes, it's not all her fault. But this happens so much that it really calls into question her judgement.

The time for a polarizing lightning rod to finally close the bad schools is over. People should not be motivated to support her just because other people badmouth her.

It's not really about her. Is it?
