Baby poops in bath

Anonymous
My 9 month old poops in the bath every. Single. Time. Every bath has turned into a poop emergency evacuation.

Doesn’t matter if it’s 5 mins or 15 mins in. Doesn’t matter if we were right on schedule with meals and naps. Doesn’t matter if it’s a daycare day or a weekend.

Surely someone else has been through this. Any advice?

Break the cycle. Skip baths fir a couple days. Then on the weekends only bathe the baby immediately after a poop. They’ll be cleaner and it’s more hygienic anyways.

Is your baby constipated? Warm baths relax the body, so they’re recommended for babies that are constipated because it can be the only way to get them to poop.

Massage stomach (and body) with warm olive or almond oil, keep the baby warm and cycle their legs before a bath. Pureed prunes in their meals. Making them sit in a squatting position before baths will make them poop. Your baby is constipated and in warm water they relax. This is not permanent. Eventually this will stop.

What are you bathing them in? I would suggest maybe giving them a bath in a plastic tub that you keep in your regular bath tub. That way you don't need to empty out the whole tub when they poop.

I don’t understand why you don’t wait until the baby poops and then do a bath? Like start running the bath before you change their diaper. Bath immediately after poop. Problem solved.

No she’s pretty regular (4-5 dirty diapers a day). She has the occasional constipation and you’re right, it helps to relieve that.

That’s good advice. The squatting was something I did when she was younger but didn’t work as well after introducing solids. I expect I need to spend a little more time on it.

And we just use the big bath. It’s a small bathroom and we found it too annoying to use the small bath with her older sibling time to revisit that!

Thank you.

4-5 dirty diapers a day is a bit on the high side for a 9 mo. What is the consistency of those bowel movements?

NP. Mine pooped this much. Went to twice a day around 12 months and finally once a day at 16-17.

OP, can you change bath time to right after one of the other dirty diapers? Otherwise your case sounds really cute and funny (but I'm sorry for the mess you have to deal with!)

You might try a double bath strategy. Put the little bath tub inside the big bath and fill both a little. Then if she poops it's contained to the little tub and you can move her to the big tub. I know you say your apartment is small but given this is happening every time it might be worth the space.
