Indoor soccer during covid?

Anonymous
I received an email about indoor soccer beginning in February for my 8 yr old DS, as training for the spring season. Im so disappointed to be put in the position as a parent to hold him back from training or worry about Covid. Has anyone done indoor soccer this winter and experienced if it is safe or not?

I have seen both sides of this. Some parents allow kids to play/practice indoor without masks, some with masks, some locations mandate masks and some opt out. We opted out after a long discussion, pro/cons etc. Our alternative is we found other outdoor training in our area and an outdoor league not with our current club. Keeps kids busy and we feel safer. I am not saying one is wrong or right just sharing our experience...I know some folks wig out when talking about covid and masks.

I wouldn't sign my child up for anything indoors. Where are you located? I am sure we can all share many outdoor training programs/clinics near you instead.

Not safe. Don’t even pretend like it is.

OP here- Im in NJ (used to live in DC so I still do general posts on here sometimes). DS is on a travel team and this is their winter training. Im fine with him not doing it and just playing in the spring outside and that is my preference. Everyone here is still doing indoor sports so its tough feeling like Im the only one not allowing it and ds is the only one not participating.

Basketball and Futsal and soccer and flag football are all outside for my boys this winter.

I would NOT send them to play any sports inside.

There's no evidence that there is any significant danger to children from indoor activities whether school or physical activities and considerable evidence that there is neither significant danger to children nor much risk for them passing it on to others - especially younger children in the latter regard.

That's the actual science - the real science - rather than the relentless nonsense fear porn peddled by the press.

So I wouldn't worry at all about signing your child up for an indoor sport. Nevertheless - if you are concerned - which is understandable given the general hysteria - it should be very easy to find an outdoor alternative as a great many outdoor options are being organized all over the place. So while I would perfectly happily send my kids to indoor training, my DS is in fact doing everything outdoors as nothing at all is being offered indoors where we are.

We struggled with this for a while in November when asked to sign up for a futsal team. We opted to join, but told the coach if we weren't comfortable we would pull out. The coach was completely fine with that. I thought we would make it a game and I would pull the plug, but so far I have allowed my child to play. The facility has done a wonderful job organizing and have mandated masks. While I think it's crazy to play with a mask, and one of my main hesitations, their coach has done great with rotating players very frequently and it's a short sided field so not a ton of running. I'm not happy or comfortable with any of it, but with everything going on we were worried about serious mental health issues as well all winter. Figured this would last a month and be over, but it's still going without any issues (knock on wood). We'll see what happens. No right answer here in my opinion.

+1. My daughter is doing indoor futsal and so far so good. Her team has been wearing mask throughout the practices and games (not required during active play but they all do anyway). The facility has done a great job.

This question boils down to how risk adverse and comfortable you are. Even though it seems the risk is low but there are definitely risks, especially if there are any long term effects from catching COVID. If you decide to do it, I would advise that your DS wears a mask at all times. And ask the coach to mandate mask wearing for all players and parents (if they are allowed inside).

Alternatively, your son is only 8 YO. Hence, he might be better of skipping team practices and just practice on his own at home on his foot skills.

No one that i know is doing indoor. I have an 8 year old and we are all outdoors in 37-44 degree weather practicing.

If i were you i would just try and do 1-2 affordable private sessions weekly or find a separate outdoor group to practice with.

So there is a new variety of COVID that is a lot more contagious. This with the spike from thanksgiving and Christmas will make what you were doing in earlier in the pandemic not relevant. I would wait till mid February or March and reassess at that point.

What utter tripe. How on earth do they know how those people got covid - of course they don;t. This is totally unscientific nonsense.

I think the danger is more for adult indoor spectators and that should be manageable like other adult indoor activities that are open. Kids that do seem at more risk are those with underlying health conditions so for sure those kids should not do indoor sports. I also question the safety of having kids wear masks during sports when they are really running hard. Personally I have opted for outdoor winter soccer with no masks required during practice or play.
