A friend of ours has been out of the US for about six months and has just informed us they don't plan to return anytime in the next few years. They've asked if we could sell their car for them (it's in a garage collecting dust).
I have zero intention of doing the Autotrader / classified things and just was going to take it to a Carmax or something like that, but I was curious what sort of forms are needed to sell someone's car for them? It's a DC titled/tagged car they bought with cash so no bank involved. Anyone done something like this? |
| Do you have the title? You’ll need their signature |
Shouldn’t they figure out these details and the. Tell you what to do? |
+1. It may be hard through carmax since the owners are overseas. Private sale will likely be easier. Is the car's registration up to date? |
wht kind of car, how old, i'm in the market for a car. but as others have noted.. you will need them to sign the title |
They are a college student with only a limited understanding of US DMV rules and regulations. The registration is uptodate. They did that just before they left. I guess we'll have to Fedex the title, unless there is some power of attorney possible. It's a Lexus SUV. Don't know which model. Probably 5+ years old. |
| Don’t do it. Too many variables/risks. More downside than upside interpersonally and liability wise |
Still need a signed title. |
What's the risk? |
When the car turns out to be a lemon who do you think the person will go after? |
| I plan to sell it to Carmax or something similar. I have little desire to deal with random car buyers. |
Too bad for them. |
I would do this. Take it to the carwash and have it detailed, drive to Carmax and be done with it. I do not want to deal with payment from random people on the street or phone calls next week about the power windows not working. |
a 5 year old Toyota that won't happen (breakdown) car max won't talk you since you are not owner of the car., who's to say that you didn't break into someone house, steal the car and title and then forge their signature on the title. |
| I helped my daughter sell her car a few weeks ago. We shopped it around to a few local new car dealers (CarMax isn't the only one that buys cars, especially with the pandemic-related shortage of used cars). The sale paperwork included a limited power-of-attorney that she had to sign, to authorize the dealer to do the title transaction on her behalf. |
