9 year old girl birthday - gift idea? She can't think of a thing she would like!

Anonymous
My daughter's 9th birthday is in 10 days and I have no idea what to get her. When I ask, she says she can't think of anyting. I swear she is not spoiled, she is just sort of an indifferent little girl. She loves to read, so I'm sure there will be a few books, but what else?! Please don't suggest lessons, she's already involved in a few things and it's enough for her. I honestly can't think of one single thing to get her! Help, please!

How about a trip? I remember at that age travel opportunities were very exciting for me. A weekend getaway not to far (New York or Philly?) to do museums etc.

Pierced ears? Tix to a performance at the Kennedy Center? Next-size-up bike? Scooter? Skateboard?

Is she into pets? Maybe a new animal addition to the family?

Just had a lecture from a teacher -- what kids want is more special time with their parents. The trip might be good. A cooking class or such together might be good (McLean Community Center has some). Just a day to do whatever she wants when she wants with her mom?

I got my niece an age appropriate cookbook, some of her own special cooking tools and a cooking class (Just 1). She loved this.

I love the trip idea - I used to love going to the Maryland Science Center at that age (yes, once a geek, always a geek). Also, some stores have jewelry-making classes that might appeal to her.

I wouldn't get a pet, unless it's something pretty small like a fish.

OP here -- We got a kitten for her last year (And I completely regret it! It does NOT get along with our older cat at all. *sigh*)

To the poster who suggested ear piercing - that's a thought. She's mentioned it, but she's also freaked out that it's going to hurt.
To those who suggest spending special time with her or doing a day trip, I think that's along the right lines. Maybe I should take a few days off work... Keep the ideas coming please!

This sort of falls under the "class" category, but she might enjoy taking a two-hour crochet lesson at one of your local craft stores. Maybe you, your daughter, and a friend of your daughter could learn together (unless you already know how!).

I learned to knit around her age, and it's been a lifelong hobby. I suggested crochet because it's easier to learn than knitting.

She could make some fun accessories (they have lots of patterns for preteens).

What about a special lunch out with mom and then manicures for both of you?

how about personalized stationery or scrapbooking materials?

For my DD's 8th birthday we took the train to NYC. We had a great time and it was a really special memory for us. I'm not sure I'd want to do that in winter though.

How about a "makeup" kit - glittery nail polish, glittery flavored lip balm, etc.

I ditto the pp who said a "makeup" kit. I would have LOVED that at that age and same for my 11 yr old niece. Maybe a cute little purse and wallet with $20 or a savings bond for college.
