District taxpayers continue to pay out the a55 in police settlements because MPD is completely and totally out of control. Beating the snot out of innocent people in broad daylight. Happens all the time. The brutalization of innocent people is heartbreaking but because they happen almost exclusively to non white people, it gets swept under the rug. Thank you Councilmember Allen for performing oversight of MPD and standing up for DC residents and taxpayers. |
| The only way there would ever be real justice would be when the payouts start coming off of their personal bank accounts. There will be no changes so long as they are free to hand out taxpayer money as settlement with zero accountability and no admission of guilt. |
While I like the idea, what would happen in situations like the Michael Brown incident? The police officer was 100% justified in his use of force, yet the city gave 1 million bucks to his parents. |
No they are not. The DC council and criminals are out of control. |
The settlements are businesses decisions, not legal decisions. From a purely financial perspective, it’s better for the taxpayers to foot an unjustifiable $1M settlement than for the community to suffer a $100m in riot damages and police overtime. |
Exactly. Still waiting for the Post to report on the spike of crime in DC we "hear little about"... |
why do you think the use of force was justified? it was excessive. police don’t get to execute anyone they want, even if they are resisting or aggressive. |
Aggressive enough, then the police have the right to defend themselves. |
| Reading that article and concluding that MPD is "out of control" demonstrates a basic misunderstanding of civil litigation. And math. |
not any more right than the general public. I don’t get to kill someone because I feel scared. Also, police need to be trained in de-escalation not “shoot as soon as you feel nervous.” |
Maybe you need to de-escalate? No one in these settlements was shot. |
the out of control aggressive behavior that lead to the settlements is absolutely related to excessive use of force. obviously. |
The issue is that you know nothing about las enforcement, tactics, firearms, use of force, etc. You are also making up your own facts. The incident in question was thoroughly investigated and the officer was cleared of any wrongdoing. He is now participating in the witness protection program because cop haters want him dead. But I'm sure you don't care. |
| Crime in DC is way more out of control right now than MPD. |
Exactly. That is why Ferguson paid out 1 million. |
