DAYCARE SHUTDOWNS ALL THE TIME

Anonymous
Our daycare has shutdown multiple times in the last few months. Safety is our priority but the lack of notice, the need to scrabble to have one of us stay home is daunting. We are both working in office, this means time off to care for our little one. How are you other parents handing flu season with your daycare?

Seriously? We’re in the middle of a pandemic, what did you expect??

Asking for tips on how other parents are handling the uptick, not judgement. Bit early for negativity, go kill someone else vibes.

I think you might need to go the nanny route for now, even though that also has attendant risks and downsides.

There is simp,y no way day cares can be expected to operate normally. They do what they can, but the reality is, families are still being stupid, traveling, having visitors...

You can’t put this on the daycare. You don’t know you have a problem until you have a problem.

Our daycare has had to quarantine 2 classrooms — one over the summer and one in the last week.

Sounds like your daycare isn’t taking good precautions.

Or the other parents aren't

How is a daycare supposed to give you advanced notice that one of its staff will be diagnosed with covid on a specific date in the future?

They have rules they have to follow. Will depend on the clients/staff they have and how good they are at enforcing them. Maybe your daycare is overlooking things.

That is so unfair. Studies show that in schools and daycare, it's not in-school transmission that is happening. It is some dumbass parents still taking their family to Disney or going to a family gathering, then not staying out of school/care for two weeks.

+1 The daycare is following CDC regulations. Not expecting the facility to give notice as I understand this is not possible. I'm asking parents, how have you navigated through this shutdowns? Have you hired part-time sitters, nanny, was it hard to find someone last minute? Don't read to much into the blame game, this is more seeking help not judgment.

Our daycare has just closed this week. It’s the first closure since July. We’re just working around our children who are five and two. They watch television. We’re fortunate to have flexible jobs. We work in the evenings after bed.

OP, if my employer and DH's weren't allowing WFH and flexibility, I would for sure have a nanny by now. That's what several friends have done who have to go in. There's simply no daycare that can give you what you want right now. It's not a realistic expectation.

Unfortunately scif work is not remote, this is not an option for us. Thank you for contributing in a positive way.

We are new parents, navigating through childcare for the first time. Have not had any issues until this month with multiple week long shutdowns at our facility. Nanny may be the best route for us long-term.
